Some YouTubers earn money from more than ordinary video ads: options include YouTube Premium, fan payments, Shopping, sponsorships, external memberships and merchandise. These routes have different requirements and workloads, and none guarantees a replacement for ad income. The headline describes a strategy some creators use—not a shift shared by every YouTuber.
Why ad revenue is only part of the picture
YouTube’s RPM metric reports revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, but it is not a complete account of a creator’s business. YouTube Help says RPM is useful but “can’t tell your whole revenue story”; it excludes brand deals and sponsorships, among other revenue not recorded in YouTube analytics. A creator’s platform dashboard can therefore describe platform income without showing every dollar earned elsewhere. YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics details what the metric covers.
There is no representative creator-level income breakdown in the cited sources showing how common each revenue route is or what share it contributes. Diversification means adding different sources, not necessarily abandoning ads or earning less from them.
Ways creators can earn beyond standard video ads
YouTube identifies several revenue features, but availability, eligibility and terms vary by feature. Its partner earnings overview and monetization guide describe the platform-native options.

YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies set conditions for commerce features. As features and eligibility can change, creators should check current guidance for their location and channel rather than assume a tool is available to everyone.
What diversification changes—and what it does not
It can spread income across different payers
Ads and Premium relate to viewing; memberships and fan-funding features depend on audience payments; sponsorships depend on brands; and merchandise depends on customers buying products. These sources do not rise or fall for identical reasons. Adding one may broaden a business’s options, but the available evidence does not establish that a particular mix reliably smooths income.

It can also add work and dependencies
Each route has its own operating burden: memberships may require recurring perks, sponsorships require negotiating and delivering agreed work, and merchandise involves sales and fulfilment. Platform-native tools remain subject to feature eligibility and terms; external income relies on relationships and services beyond YouTube. A creator is trading among potential revenue, workload, audience fit and dependence on platforms or commercial partners—not choosing a universally superior option.
Large ecosystem figures are not personal income forecasts
YouTube reported that its U.S. ecosystem contributed $55 billion to GDP and supported more than 490,000 full-time jobs in 2024. Those are company-reported ecosystem-level figures, not estimates of a typical channel’s earnings or proof that diversification caused income growth. YouTube’s 2024 U.S. impact report provides the figures and context.

In its 2025 CEO letter, YouTube reported that channel memberships increased by more than 40% in the preceding year. That is a company-reported trend, not a forecast for an individual creator or evidence that memberships replace ads. The CEO letter does not establish a more precise measurement window than “last year.”
Examples show the range, not a guaranteed formula
A 2022 TIME report described creators pairing Patreon subscriptions with merchandise, illustrating how external fan payments and product sales can sit alongside platform revenue. The examples show possible business models, not results that apply to every channel or current terms for any service. TIME’s report also quotes LSE researcher Zoe Glatt: “Content creators are required to diversify their labor and income streams across many platforms and projects if they hope to build sustainable audiences and careers.” This is a perspective on the pressures creators face, not evidence that diversification guarantees sustainability.

The same article quotes a YouTube spokesperson saying, “These creators are true businesses and they’ve added to the creator economy in significant ways so we would expect them to diversify their revenue streams.” That is the company’s view, rather than a representative finding about creator earnings.

For a creator considering another income stream, the useful question is not simply whether it can make money, but whether its payer, workload and risks fit the channel.

- Identify the payer: Is income tied to advertisers, YouTube, fans, a sponsor or product customers?
- Check the dependency: Does the route rely on YouTube feature eligibility, an external service, a brand relationship or product demand?
- Count the obligations: Consider ongoing benefits, promotional deliverables, product development, fulfilment and customer support.
- Separate platform reporting from business income: RPM is not a full ledger when sponsorships and other external income are involved.
- Test audience fit and uncertainty: The sources do not establish a typical income split or show that any route works equally well across channels.
