Yes. Costco members can rent cars through Costco Travel’s Low Price Finder. Costco does not own a fleet. It is a booking channel that lists rental companies’ cars, applies member pricing where it is available, and passes your reservation to the rental location you choose. You need a valid Costco membership to book, the primary driver must carry a valid membership card at pickup, and online reservations generally require no payment until you reach the rental counter.
Who the service is for
Costco Travel’s rental-car service is open to Costco members. A membership number is needed whether you book online or call a rental representative, and Costco’s FAQ states: “You will need a valid membership number to book online or when calling to speak to a rental car representative.”
Two people can be involved in one rental, and they do not have to be the same member:
- The person who books needs a valid membership number.
- The primary driver must have their own valid Costco membership card available at the counter, even if someone else made the reservation.
Additional drivers must also meet the rental company’s requirements for age, license, and location. Drivers under 25 may face extra charges or restrictions, and Costco Travel’s FAQ says they may need to book by phone rather than online.

How booking works, step by step
- Sign in to Costco Travel and open the car rental section, which leads to the Low Price Finder.
- Enter the pickup place, drop-off place, pickup date and time, and return date and time.
- Review the results. Member discounts and coupons are already reflected in the displayed price. Costco Travel’s FAQ says the Low Price Finder selects the best applicable coupon that can be combined with the member discount, based on rental length, car type, location, and dates.
- Select a vehicle class and complete the reservation with the membership number requested.
- Keep the confirmation. You settle the rental at the counter when you pick up the car.
Treat the displayed rate, inventory, and taxes as tied to that exact search. A different date, pickup location, or return point can produce a different total.
Payment: online versus phone
Costco Travel’s rental-car page promotes the benefit as “Book Now, Pay at the Counter.” Payment rules differ by booking channel, so check which one applies to your reservation.

At pickup, the rental company’s payment and security requirements apply. Costco’s FAQ says a major credit card must be presented, and debit cards are accepted only at some locations under location-specific terms. The rental company may place a hold on your card for the estimated charges. Ask the location directly about card type, hold amount, and whether a debit card is accepted before you travel.
Changing or canceling a reservation
To change dates, a vehicle class, or a location, avoid canceling first. Costco Travel’s guidance is to make and confirm the replacement reservation, then cancel the original. A canceled reservation cannot be reinstated, and the price or availability of the new booking may change in the meantime, so a cancel-first approach can leave you with no car.

- Check that the new confirmation shows the rate and total you expect.
- Cancel the original reservation only after the new one is confirmed.
Member extras: additional drivers and the Executive reward
Costco Travel advertises a waiver of one additional-driver fee, but only at participating locations. Confirm the location supports the waiver before you book, and make sure any second driver meets the rental company’s requirements.
Executive Members can earn an annual 2% reward on eligible purchases, subject to program terms and exclusions. Check whether your booking qualifies, because the reward does not automatically apply to every rental charge.

Rental insurance
Costco Travel points to Zurich for rental insurance, but it does not treat that as a replacement for your existing coverage. Do not assume your personal auto policy or credit card covers every rental, destination, vehicle class, or trip. Compare the coverage limits, deductibles, and exclusions in writing with your insurer and card issuer, and decide whether to buy the optional coverage at the counter.
How to compare a Costco rental with another quote
Compare the final total for the same:
- pickup and return locations
- dates and times
- vehicle class
- driver ages
Then check the items that often change the total:
- taxes and airport or location surcharges
- fuel terms
- optional insurance
- whether the member discount and coupon are included in the rate
- whether the additional-driver waiver applies at that location
- whether a promotion has separate booking and travel windows
- payment and deposit requirements
Costs that sit outside the booking price
The rental company’s rules govern the rental, and Costco Travel’s terms state that rental cars are subject to those rules. Late returns, alternate drop-off locations, underage-driver charges, fuel, and added extras can increase the amount you owe at the counter. Promotions, coupons, inventory, accepted payment methods, and location-specific waivers change, so verify the terms shown on your own reservation before you rely on any figure in this article.
