Those alerts are not interchangeable: a compensated alert means Yelp says it received evidence that someone offered an incentive tied to reviews, while a suspicious-activity alert can reflect unusual review patterns or links to coordinated review buying or selling. Neither annual count shows how many businesses in total buy reviews, and a suspicious alert alone does not establish a specific payment for a five-star review.
What Yelp’s two review alerts mean
Yelp describes Consumer Alerts as warnings about evidence of extreme attempts to manipulate ratings and reviews or other egregious conduct. The alert appears above a business’s review section, explains the reason for the notice and, where available, may link to evidence. Yelp’s filing with the SEC describes the alert mechanism, not a judicial finding that a business committed an offense.

Yelp says its 2025 Trust & Safety report recorded 128 compensated-activity alerts and 363 suspicious-review-activity alerts worldwide. These are separate categories, so their counts should not be added or treated as equivalent measures of proven paid reviews.
How the alerts and review history appear to users
The alert is displayed above the business’s review section, where visitors can see Yelp’s explanation and, when available, a link to supporting evidence. Yelp’s 2024 Trust & Safety report also says the platform introduced a Consumer Alerts History section listing certain prior alerts: compensated activity, suspicious review activity and questionable legal threats. A history entry concerns a past alert; it is not the same as a new allegation about every current review.

The latest figures available in Yelp’s 2025 report cover activity from January 1 through December 31, 2025, globally. Yelp says it placed 128 Compensated Activity Alerts, compared with 120 in 2024, and 363 Suspicious Review Activity Alerts, compared with 427 in 2024. These are company-reported enforcement counts: they measure alerts Yelp says it placed, not the full number of businesses buying reviews, the number of reviews involved, or whether the alerts reduced manipulation.
Yelp says users contributed approximately 22 million reviews worldwide in 2025. Of those, about 70% were recommended, 17% were not recommended, 11% were removed by Yelp, and 2% were self-removed. Those percentages describe all contributed reviews, not the prevalence of paid reviews. Yelp’s 2024 report, published February 5, 2025, provides the prior-year alert counts.

What Yelp’s business rules prohibit
Yelp’s U.S. Business Terms, dated February 22, 2024, prohibit businesses from offering discounts, free goods or services, refunds, gift cards, contest entries, deals or other incentives in exchange for reviews—or to prevent or remove them. The terms also prohibit soliciting reviews and paying or inducing someone to post, refrain from posting or remove a review. Yelp further states that buying advertising does not influence its recommendation software or where reviews appear.
For practical guidance, Yelp tells businesses to focus on customer experience rather than asking customers to leave reviews. Its consumer guidance says not to accept payment or a refund in exchange for changing or removing a review and describes a way to report attempts to buy positive reviews. These are platform rules and guidance; they should not be confused with an independent legal determination about a specific business.

How to read a business’s alert without overclaiming
- Check the exact alert category and Yelp’s stated reason on the business page.
- If the notice links to evidence, read what it actually documents. An offer of an incentive is not automatically proof that a named five-star review was bought.
- Distinguish evidence of compensated activity from suspicious patterns or review-ring connections; the latter can prompt a warning without establishing a particular payment.
- Treat the alert as one signal when evaluating a business. Yelp’s alert counts and all-review statistics do not establish the quality of a specific business or review.
