Yami announced a $50 million Series B on March 30, 2022, co-led by Altos Ventures and Balsam Bay Partners, with J.P. Morgan and GGV Capital also participating. The company said it would use the funding to speed delivery, expand its catalog, improve vendor support, and invest in supply-chain technology.
Who invested in Yami’s Series B?
Altos Ventures and Balsam Bay Partners co-led the round. J.P. Morgan and GGV Capital participated. TechCrunch reported that the Series B brought Yami’s total funding to $60 million; Yami did not disclose a valuation. TechCrunch and Yami’s March 2022 announcement reported the financing.
What Yami said it would do with the funding
Yami described itself as a direct-to-consumer marketplace for Asian food, beauty, health, and home products. In its announcement, the company said the money would help it:
- Speed up delivery.
- Broaden its product selection.
- Provide more support to vendors.
- Invest in technology to strengthen its supply chain.
TechCrunch also reported that founder and CEO Alex Zhou discussed a New Jersey warehouse, investment in AI and big data, personalized recommendations, and possible entry into Canada. These were plans or possibilities discussed in 2022, not confirmation that each was completed. TechCrunch’s report covered those comments.

What Yami sold and whom it served
The company positioned Yami as a marketplace for Asian American shoppers as well as other consumers interested in Asian products. Its 2022 announcement cited brands including Shiseido, Dr. Jart, CJ Food, Samyang, Calbee, and Lotte as examples of its assortment. That historical list does not mean every brand or product is available today, and it is not an endorsement. Yami’s announcement also quoted Zhou describing the company’s curation, a characterization attributable to him rather than an independently established ranking.
How large was Yami’s marketplace?
Yami reported more than 260,000 SKUs, over 4,000 brands, and more than 2 million customers in 2022. Those are company figures tied to the funding announcement. The company also claimed at the time that one in ten Asian Americans chose Yami as a go-to destination; this was a company claim, not an independently measured market-share statistic. Yami’s March 2022 announcement provides that historical context.

Yami’s About page now reports more than 500,000 products and over 9,000 brands. These current company-reported counts are not directly comparable to the 2022 figures: the older catalog count was expressed in SKUs, while the current page says products. In April 2026, Yami announced that its strategic partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation was live and was anchored by a Series C strategic investment. Yami said the collaboration would combine Mitsubishi Shokuhin’s supplier network and infrastructure with Yami’s direct-to-consumer platform to help Japanese brands enter North America. The announcement also said the partnership would help fund expansion into Canada. It did not state the investment amount, so the Series C should not be assigned a dollar value based on this announcement. Yami’s April 2026 announcement describes the partnership.
