Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is no longer available to pre-order. The original Nintendo Switch version has been on sale since March 20, 2025, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition followed on February 19, 2026. If you are buying the game now, you are choosing between releases, and possibly an upgrade pack, rather than reserving a copy. This guide covers what you can still buy, what it costs where the prices are published, and how to decide between versions.
The pre-order period has ended
Pre-orders were a UK and Ireland offer in early 2025. Nintendo UK published its pre-order announcement on January 24, 2025. Pre-orders placed through the Nintendo Store in those two markets came with a keyring while stocks lasted. A separate Epic Bundle added a physical copy of the game, a desk mat and a holographic sticker set for an extra £8 in the UK or €10 in Ireland.
Those bonuses were regional and time-limited. Nothing in the official material suggests they are still offered, so do not plan a purchase around them.
Release dates
- Original Nintendo Switch version: released March 20, 2025, according to Nintendo’s release announcement and product listings.
- Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: released February 19, 2026, according to Nintendo UK’s current product listing.
Because both releases are out, any page that still calls the game upcoming or open for pre-order is out of date.

What you can expect to pay
Game prices depend on region, currency, platform and sale status, and the official sources do not give a full current price list. The only regular and sale figures available are for Nintendo’s US digital store, which showed a $41.99 sale price against a $59.99 regular price when checked in 2026. A sale can end at any time, so check the live page before relying on that figure. The table below lists every option the sources cover and marks what is not published.
| Option | Release date | Published price evidence | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Switch game, digital (Nintendo US store) | March 20, 2025 | $59.99 regular; $41.99 on sale, as shown on Nintendo’s US page in 2026 | Whether the sale is still running and its end date |
| Original Switch game, physical | March 20, 2025 | Not stated for any region in the sources reviewed | Current retailer price and whether stock is available in your region |
| Switch 2 Edition, full purchase | February 19, 2026 | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Price on the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 or on the Nintendo Store in your region |
| Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack (for owners of the original game) | Not stated separately | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Price and terms in your region on the same Nintendo channels |
Do not compare the US dollar figures with prices in other currencies without converting them at the current exchange rate and checking whether local prices include sales tax or VAT.

Original Switch or Switch 2 Edition
The two versions share the same core game. The difference is how it runs and which hardware you need. Pick the version based on the console you own, then check the extra costs.
The original Nintendo Switch game
Xenoblade Chronicles X is an action RPG set on the planet Mira. Nintendo describes enhanced visuals and added story elements compared with the Wii U version. You create an avatar and choose a class, take on quests, and can unlock a customizable Skell mech for exploration and combat. Nintendo Canada’s product listing gives the game file size as 13.5 GB on Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo states that the Switch 2 Edition supports enhanced resolution up to 4K in TV mode and improved performance up to 60 fps. The 4K setting requires a 4K-capable TV. These are Nintendo’s stated maximums. The sources do not include independent frame-rate or resolution testing, so treat them as the platform’s targets rather than guaranteed results in every scene. Nintendo Canada’s listing gives the file size as 14.8 GB on Nintendo Switch 2, so make sure you have the storage space before you buy.
Buying the upgrade pack if you already own the original
Nintendo says owners of the original Switch game can buy the Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack. Nintendo Support names the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 and the Nintendo Store as the places to buy it. The sources do not give the upgrade pack’s price, so you need the live figure before you decide.

- Rebuild humanity on the mysterious planet Mira in this action RPG
The useful comparison is the upgrade pack price against the full Switch 2 Edition price in your region. The upgrade is the cheaper route only if its price is clearly lower than the full edition, and only if you plan to play on Switch 2. If you are happy with the original game on your current console, the upgrade adds cost without changing the game you already own.

The physical Switch game is the most clearly identified product in the official material, and it is the version to look for if you prefer a disc you can resell or lend. Digital copies can be cheaper during sales, but the sources do not show whether physical stock is available in any particular region. Physical pricing and stock also change quickly, so check retailers directly rather than relying on older listings.

- Confirm the region of the store page you are using, because prices and currency differ.
- Check whether a sale is live, when it ends, and whether it applies to the version you want.
- For the Switch 2 Edition, find its full price on the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 or the Nintendo Store.
- If you own the original, find the upgrade pack price and compare it with the full edition.
- Confirm you have 13.5 GB free for the original or 14.8 GB free for the Switch 2 Edition.
- For physical copies, check current retailer stock and price in your country.
Which version to buy
If you have a Nintendo Switch 2 and want the enhanced version, buy the Switch 2 Edition, unless you already own the original, in which case the upgrade pack is the cheaper route as long as its price is clearly below the full edition. If you only have an original Nintendo Switch, buy the original game. Its price is the main question, and the US digital figure of $41.99 on sale against $59.99 regular is the only verified price comparison in the sources. Wait for a confirmed sale only if you are not in a hurry, and avoid paying for pre-order bonuses that are no longer available.
