Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack adds Switch 2 features and enhancements to the Definitive Edition game you already own. You do not need to buy the game again, but Nintendo’s listing says the full Switch game is required to use the upgrade content. The pack is digital content. The February 2026 price reported for it was $4.99. Path 2: You own neither version and want to play on Switch 2

The listing names smoother framerate and 4K resolution in TV mode as features. Those are Nintendo’s claims. This article did not test performance and found no independent benchmark. This article also could not confirm the Switch 2 Edition’s current price, so compare it against the sum of the base game and upgrade pack at the same moment.

The discount is real arithmetic, not a bundling trick: $59.99 minus $39.99 is $20. Whether it still matters depends on the price today.

How to decide
- Do you already own the Switch game? If yes, the upgrade pack is the only purchase to compare.
- Do you want a physical copy? Check whether a physical Switch base game is in stock at a retailer you trust. The February report did not give a physical price, and the upgrade pack is digital only.
- Is the Switch 2 Edition cheaper than the parts? Add the current base game price and the current upgrade pack price, then compare that total with the bundle price on the same day.
