Xbox Layoffs: What the 2024 Report Said—and What Changed by September 2026

A 2024 report said Xbox was offering voluntary severance to some ZeniMax staff. Xbox later announced separate 2026 reductions; here’s what was reported, what was confirmed and which studio outcomes remained unresolved.

Yes—but the headline refers to a May 2024 report, not an Xbox announcement. Jason Schreier’s report said Xbox was offering voluntary severance agreements to some ZeniMax employees and that more cuts were expected, citing unnamed sources. Xbox later announced a separate, larger restructuring in 2026: approximately 3,200 planned Xbox role reductions during FY27, followed by 268 additional eliminations announced in September. Those later figures should not be confused with the unconfirmed severance plans in the 2024 report.

What did the May 2024 report say?

The May 9, 2024 report by Jason Schreier, republished by TechXplore from Bloomberg and Tribune Content Agency, said Microsoft’s Xbox division had begun offering voluntary severance agreements to some ZeniMax staff and that other employees had been told more cuts were coming. The report relied on unnamed employees and meeting attendees. Xbox declined to comment, so the specific severance plans were not an official company confirmation. Read the May 2024 report.

The report followed studio closures that included Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, and the absorption of another subsidiary. It said, citing unnamed sources, that Tango had been pitching a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush. At a town hall, Xbox president Matt Booty praised the game but, according to the report, did not give a specific reason for Tango’s closure.

What explanation did Xbox leaders give in 2024?

In the account of the ZeniMax town hall, Booty described the studios as spread too thin and said closing studios would free resources for other parts of the business. He compared the allocation of support to “peanut butter on bread” and said leaders across the division had felt understaffed. ZeniMax studios head Jill Braff said it was difficult to support nine studios around the world with a lean central team and an expanding workload, adding, “I think we were about to topple over.” These were broad explanations reported from the meeting, not a stated, studio-specific explanation for Tango’s closure. TechXplore’s report.

The report also quoted Circana analyst Mat Piscatella saying U.S. non-mobile video-game subscription spending had been “flat to low single-digit growth” since mid-2021. That was a statement in the 2024 report, not a current measure of subscription spending.

How the later Xbox cuts compare

Xbox made separate restructuring announcements in July and September 2026. The dates, scope and status matter: planned reductions are not the same as completed eliminations, and a proposed studio closure under consultation is not a final closure.

July 6, 2026, Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman Around 4,800 roles company-wide, about 2.1% of Microsoft’s global workforce. Microsoft said much of the impact was in its Commercial and Xbox organizations. This company-wide total is separate from Xbox’s approximately 3,200 figure. Microsoft announcement.
September 22, 2026, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty 268 additional role eliminations. Xbox said the action brought completed steps since July to roughly three-quarters of the announced restructuring. The update described reporting changes and ongoing consultation over proposed closures at Ninja Theory and Arkane; it did not establish final outcomes for those consultations. Xbox Wire update.

What Xbox said about the 2026 restructuring

In July, Sharma said, “Our business today is not healthy.” Xbox attributed the restructuring to its business and organizational needs. Its explanation included claims that its margins were “3-10x lower” than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses and that it invested “64 cents for every dollar” in a typical year. These are Xbox’s own characterizations, not independently audited comparisons established here. Sharma’s Xbox Wire statement.

Microsoft’s separate company-wide announcement gave its own workforce total and said the impact was concentrated in Commercial and Xbox organizations. Do not add the company-wide 4,800 figure to the Xbox 3,200 figure: they describe different scopes, and Microsoft’s broader total includes Xbox. Microsoft’s announcement.

What the September update did—and did not—confirm

Booty’s September update announced 268 further eliminations and said completed actions since July amounted to roughly three-quarters of the restructuring announced in July. It also reported studio reporting-line changes and ongoing consultation. For Ninja Theory, Xbox said consultation would begin on a proposed closure while it continued to explore other paths. Arkane’s consultation was still underway and expected to continue through year-end. Neither description establishes a final closure outcome as of the September update. Xbox Wire update.

For a later account of the October 6 town hall, secondary reporting is available from Windows Central. It should be treated as reporting about that meeting, not as a replacement for Xbox’s dated public statements.
