The figure combines revenue from in-app purchases and advertising; it is not profit, annual revenue or sales of paid game copies. Playtika said the milestone came six years after the game’s global launch.
What the $1 billion figure counts
Playtika defined June’s Journey’s lifetime revenue as gross revenue from in-app purchases plus advertising. Its November 2023 announcement did not break out how much came from either source, and it did not describe the figure as independently audited. The milestone therefore describes cumulative gross revenue from two monetization streams—not the amount left after costs or a measure of what the game earns in a typical year. Playtika’s announcement states the definition and date.
Why a free game can generate that revenue
June’s Journey is free to download and play, but that does not mean it has no revenue. The official Apple listing describes optional purchases of virtual items for real money and says the game may include advertising. Those in-app purchases and ads are the two sources included in Playtika’s lifetime gross-revenue figure. The milestone is not a count of paid downloads or retail game sales.
The game is a 1920s-set hidden-object mystery featuring amateur detective June Parker. Players search illustrated scenes for clues, develop an estate, join Detective Clubs and follow story chapters. Apple’s listing says in-app purchases can be disabled in device settings. Store descriptions and age labels can change; Apple lists the app for ages 18 and older, while Google Play shows PEGI 16 and flags user interactions and in-game purchases that include random items. What Playtika’s “number one” claim means
Playtika also called June’s Journey the world’s highest-grossing hidden-object game. The release’s footnote gives the narrower basis for that claim: consumer spend in the Hidden Object (Puzzle) Subgenre across the Apple App Store and Google Play, where it says the game had ranked number one globally since April 2019, according to Data.ai. That is a company announcement attributing a particular platform-, genre- and metric-specific ranking to an analytics provider; it should not be read as a claim about all game categories, all stores or profit. The release and its footnote provide the attribution.
Who made the game
Wooga is a Berlin-based mobile-game studio founded in 2009. It has been part of Playtika since 2018, according to the companies’ materials. Wooga’s current facts page lists June’s Journey at “$1bn+” in lifetime revenue, but does not provide a newer as-of date or a more precise total. That current shorthand does not change the date or definition of the specific $1 billion milestone announced in November 2023. See Wooga’s facts page and Playtika’s 2023 release.

What the milestone does—and does not—show
The announcement establishes the reported cumulative gross-revenue milestone and how Playtika defined it. It does not disclose the split between ads and purchases, operating costs, profit, or a current precise lifetime total. Playtika also reported that 90% of dedicated players were women and that most were over 55, but its release did not explain the statistic’s sampling method; it is company-reported audience data, not a general finding about the game’s entire player population.
