Woolworths said it regretted an August 2022 incident at its Mandurah store and was investigating after two sisters said they had been accused of stealing and felt racially profiled. The account was reported by PerthNow on 17 August 2022. The report records the family’s allegation and Woolworths’ response at the time; it does not establish that racial profiling occurred or report the investigation’s outcome.

What did the sisters say happened at the Mandurah store?

PerthNow reported that Tiegan Eades, then 24, and her sister said they were shopping at a Woolworths in Mandurah, Western Australia, on a Monday afternoon in August 2022 when a store manager and a Mandurah Forum security guard told them to leave. The sisters said they and others had been accused of stealing, although they said they were innocent and felt they had been racially profiled. The report also says two other Indigenous women were involved in the accusation described by the sisters.

The sisters said they left upset and embarrassed. Their mother, teacher Isobel Bevis, was called to collect them. These details are part of the family’s account as reported by PerthNow, not independently established findings.

How did Woolworths respond?

A Woolworths spokesperson said the company regretted the incident, would investigate, and would contact the team members and the family. The spokesperson said: “We deeply regret that the incident occurred”. The company also said it would not comment further until its investigation was complete: “In fairness to all parties involved, we won’t be making any further comments until our investigation is completed.”

The PerthNow report does not provide the investigation’s conclusion or describe any later resolution. It therefore supports describing what Woolworths said it would do at the time, but not claiming that the allegation was confirmed, dismissed, or adjudicated.

What was the connection to Nicky Winmar?

The report identified Nicky Winmar, the former Indigenous Australian rules footballer, as a cousin of one of the women. It briefly recalled his 1993 response to racist abuse from Collingwood fans: he lifted his guernsey and pointed to his skin. That family connection explains Winmar’s place in the report; it does not independently substantiate the allegation about the Mandurah store.

What did Western Australia’s Aboriginal Affairs Minister say?

Western Australian Aboriginal Affairs Minister Tony Buti described racial profiling as an insidious form of discrimination and said it needed to be addressed at individual, organisational, and community levels. PerthNow reported this as his view on the broader issue. It was not a finding about what happened in the specific store incident.
