The announcement was tied to a smaller aircraft delivery schedule, but Southwest’s CEO said the network decisions were being made regardless of Boeing’s delivery delays. Later airport cuts in 2025 and 2026 involved different airports, so this article separates the 2024 plan from what came after.
The four airports on the 2024 list
The list and the August 2024 timing come from Associated Press and Axios reporting dated April 25, 2024. Axios reported that Southwest announced the plan after posting its first-quarter loss.
| Airport | Location | Planned last Southwest service | Status in the 2026 filings reviewed here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bellingham International Airport (BLI) | Washington, USA | August 2024 | Not listed among later actions |
| Cozumel International Airport (CZM) | Mexico | August 2024 | Not listed among later actions |
| George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) | Houston, Texas, USA | August 2024 | Not listed among later actions |
| Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) | New York, USA | August 2024 | Not listed among later actions |
The “not listed” entries mean only that the later Southwest filings and reports reviewed for this article do not name these airports. They do not confirm a current schedule, so check Southwest’s live schedule before relying on any of these airports.
Why the “fewer planes” explanation needs context
AP reported that Southwest expected to receive fewer new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft than it had planned and would run a smaller fleet than planned. The airline’s 2024 expectation for those deliveries fell from 46 aircraft to 20, a figure AP attributed to Southwest, and the airline said it would offset part of the shortfall by retiring fewer aircraft. AP placed the airport decisions within a broader set of network changes rather than presenting them as a single fleet-driven decision.

What the CEO said about the cause
Axios attributed this statement to CEO Bob Jordan: “We’re taking network actions regardless.” In the same reporting, Jordan said the decisions to stop or change airport operations were unrelated to Boeing’s delivery delays. Readers should treat fleet constraints as part of the context, not as the proven sole cause of the four exits.
The financial backdrop
Axios reported a first-quarter 2024 loss of $231 million, compared with a $159 million loss in the same quarter of 2023. That comparison is the company’s reported figure from the period, and it is the context Axios gave for the timing of the announcement.

Atlanta and O’Hare were cut in 2024, but not as exits
The 2024 coverage also described reductions at Atlanta and Chicago O’Hare. These were schedule cuts at airports where Southwest kept service, not additional entries on the four-airport list. The reporting reviewed for this article does not give a complete count of flights or routes removed at either airport, so no precise figure should be attached to those cuts.
What changed in later filings
Southwest’s annual report for 2025, filed in February 2026 on Form 10-K, said that in response to market conditions the airline significantly reduced service at Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale while expanding at Nashville and San Diego. Its quarterly report filed in July 2026 on Form 10-Q said Southwest suspended operations at Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles effective June 4, 2026, and reduced staffing at Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and Philadelphia.

Nearby Southwest airports after the 2026 exits
Aviation Week reported in March 2026 that Southwest’s Chicago service would continue at Chicago Midway, and that Washington-area service would continue at Baltimore/Washington International and Ronald Reagan Washington National. These are nearby alternatives. They do not guarantee that a particular route, departure time, or connection is still offered.

How to check whether your trip is affected
- Confirm which airport code you are actually booked into. Bellingham (BLI), Cozumel (CZM), Houston Intercontinental (IAH), and Syracuse (SYR) were on the 2024 list, while O’Hare (ORD) and Dulles (IAD) were the 2026 suspensions.
- Search your exact origin, destination, and travel date on Southwest.com or in the Southwest app, not on a general airport page.
- If the airport you need is missing from results, compare nearby Southwest airports and the drive or transit time between them, then price each option as a separate itinerary.
- Keep the confirmation details for any change and check the flight status close to departure, since schedules are time-sensitive.
Key points to remember
- The four airports named in the April 2024 announcement were Bellingham, Cozumel, Houston Intercontinental, and Syracuse, with planned exits in August 2024.
- Atlanta and O’Hare cuts in 2024 were schedule reductions, not exits on that list.
- The smaller fleet was part of the reporting, but the CEO tied the network decisions to a broader plan rather than to Boeing delivery delays alone.
- The 2026 O’Hare and Dulles suspensions are later decisions and should not be confused with the 2024 list.
