Window Seats Without Windows: Why United and Delta Face Proposed Class Actions

Proposed class actions filed in August 2025 allege United and Delta sold window-seat selections for seats beside blank cabin walls. The claims are unproven; here is what the filings say and how to check a seat before you pay.

Two proposed class actions filed in August 2025 allege that United Airlines and Delta Air Lines charged passengers for seats labeled as window seats when some of those seats face a blank cabin wall with no window. These are allegations, not findings. No court has decided that either airline broke the law, and no damages have been awarded. What has changed since filing is procedural: a July 2026 report said a federal judge allowed the United case to move past a motion to dismiss, which lets the claims proceed without resolving them.

What the lawsuits allege

Both cases are proposed class actions, meaning the plaintiffs want to represent a larger group of passengers. The United complaint was filed on August 19, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California as Case No. 3:25-cv-06995. Associated Press reported the separate Delta filing in New York in an August 21, 2025 article.

United Airlines

The United plaintiffs say seat maps and other booking materials described certain positions as “window seats.” They say customers paid fees, spent loyalty points, or made other tradeoffs to get those seats, and that some of the seats face a wall panel instead of a window. The complaint asks for monetary relief and for clearer disclosure or injunctive relief. Those are the plaintiffs’ requests, not rulings.

Delta Air Lines

AP reported that Delta faces a similar proposed class action on the same core theory: a seat sold as a window seat that lacks a window. The reporting describes the alleged passenger experience and the airlines’ responses, but the sources reviewed for this article do not establish the current docket status of the Delta case from a court record.

Why a seat can sit beside a wall with no window

According to the United complaint, some windowless positions result from aircraft interior layout. It points to air-conditioning riser ducts that run through the cabin wall and prevent a window from being installed in one particular row. The complaint cites seats 10A, 11A, and 12A as examples.

Those seat numbers come from a pleading and should not be treated as a permanent list. Layouts differ by aircraft type, cabin configuration, and airline, and the same seat letter can have a window on one aircraft and not on another. A seat that lacks a window on one flight may be different on the next.

Where the cases stand

A July 2026 account of the United case reported competing positions at an early stage. United argued that “window” describes a seat’s position beside the cabin wall, not a promise of an outside view, and that its contract of carriage did not guarantee a view. According to that report, Judge James Donato found it plausible that booking screens and boarding passes identifying a seat as a window seat could support passenger contract claims.

That ruling answers only whether the complaint can move forward. It does not decide what “window seat” means under the contract, whether any passenger was harmed, how much any class could recover, or whether a class should be certified. The July 2026 report described the case as still pending.

HEETA Inflatable Seat Cushion for Airplane Travel Long Flights Stadium Car
  • MORE CUSHIONING FOR LONG FLIGHTS - Thick 26D high-resilience foam and adjustable air add a softer, more supportive layer between you and a firm airplane seat. The 2-inch cushion helps make long flights, business trips, vacations, airport waits and daily commutes easier on hard seating
  • SELF-INFLATES IN ABOUT 5 SECONDS - Open the inner valve and let the foam draw in air. Because the cushion has been tightly compressed for shipping, the first inflation may take longer; add 1–2 breaths if needed, then tighten the valve securely to help minimize air loss. There is no need to overinflate
  • ADJUST THE FEEL, NOT YOUR TRIP - Start at about 80%–90% inflation for stable support, then add or release air until it feels right for you. After self-inflation, press the cushion by hand to move or release excess air for a more comfortable, less wobbly feel. Some softening after several hours may be the air-foam core naturally settling, not a defect
  • PACKS SMALL WITHOUT WEIGHING YOU DOWN - The 0.5 lbs cushion measures 16.9 × 13 × 2 inches when open and rolls down to approximately 7.5 × 3.5 inches. Slip it into the included storage bag, carry it by the drawcord, or pack it inside a backpack, carry-on, camping kit or travel bag without adding unnecessary bulk. Open the valve, roll out the air and pack it for your next trip
  • READY FOR FLIGHTS AND THE OUTDOORS - The raised-dot top adds gentle contour, while the textured, waterproof bottom helps withstand moisture and reduce shifting on many surfaces. Use it for hiking, camping, fishing, stadiums and outdoor events to add cushioning over hard benches, cold surfaces, grass and uneven ground

The reported facts about the Delta case are thinner. Until a court record or reliable docket summary confirms its status, readers should treat it as an open proposed class action with no reported merits ruling.

Other airlines

The United complaint states that other carriers, including American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, alert customers when a seat has no window. AP reported that this comparison was made in the lawsuits. The sources reviewed do not confirm how those airlines label such seats today, so treat the comparison as a claim made in the complaint rather than a verified industry standard.

  • CloudAir Support: This airplane seat cushion is equipped with 49 pressure reducing airbags that can evenly distribute weight, effectively reducing pressure on the coccyx and buttocks and relieving fatigue caused by prolonged sitting(✅ Correct: Inflate to 50–60% capacity; the air chamber should be full but yield noticeably when pressed by hand. On an airplane, 30–40% inflation is recommended.❌ Incorrect: Do not over-inflate until rigid; sitting on an over-inflated cushion will be uncomfortable and negate the pressure-relieving effect.)
  • Built in Inflation Pump Design: Compared with other inflatable seat cushions, it does not rely on an external inflation pump and is very convenient to use. Simply press the surface inflation button repeatedly(Tip for easier inflation: Start by blowing one breath of air in, then use the manual pump to adjust the inflation level.)
  • Adjustable Comfort: After inflation is complete, you can press the surface adjustment button to slowly release the gas inside the cushion to change its support. You can adjust to the best comfort according to your actual feelings(✅When storing, be sure to open the exhaust valve to release all the air.)
  • Portable and Widely Used: When storing, first exhaust the air inside the cushion, then fold the cushion and put it into a storage bag. It is very portable and is an ideal companion for long-distance flights, travel, office work, driving, camping and other scenarios
  • Practical Three-layer Structure Design: The smooth surface of the fabric is skin friendly and breathable. The high elasticity and durable TPU layer in the middle can withstand a weight of up to 440 pounds. Paired with a reliable non-slip bottom, it firmly grips chair surfaces and can remain stable even when it bumps or moves suddenly

What to check before paying for a window seat

If a view matters to you, the dispute points to a few checks that protect you whether or not the cases succeed.

  1. Open the seat map for your specific flight, not a generic map for the aircraft model. Confirm the aircraft type shown in your booking, since the same airline can configure the same model differently.
  2. Look for any note that the seat has no window, is next to a wall, or has a limited view. Take a screenshot of the seat map and fare details at purchase.
  3. Check the airline’s current seat-feature description for the seat you want. If the labeling is unclear, contact the airline before you pay and ask in writing whether the seat has an installed window.
  4. Confirm whether the seat fee is refundable or can be changed if the seat lacks the feature you paid for. Ask whether a point-based or fee-based selection can be reversed without penalty.
  5. If the seat turns out to lack a window after you have boarded, ask the gate or cabin crew to document the issue and keep your boarding pass and receipt for any later complaint.

The table below sets out the four questions that matter when comparing how airlines handle this, along with what the reporting supports.

Question to ask Why it matters What the reporting establishes
Does the seat-selection screen flag a missing window? A clear label on the map helps show what the fee buys. The United complaint says other carriers alert customers to some windowless seats. Current practice at each airline was not verified.
Is the aircraft and seat assignment known and stable? Aircraft swaps can move you to a different layout. The complaint attributes some windowless seats to aircraft layout, with seat numbers that vary by aircraft.
What does the airline say about seat features? Written statements can be compared against the seat you receive. United’s contract argument is reported in the July 2026 account. No airline’s current seat-feature policy was verified.
Is the fee refundable or adjustable if the feature is absent? This determines your recovery options if the seat disappoints. Not established by the sources reviewed for any airline.

What the quoted airline response does and does not show

The United complaint reproduces a customer-service reply it attributes to United: “[s]orry. We never guaranteed you will get a window.” The complaint presents this as a response to an earlier passenger exchange. It is not a current policy statement, and it is not a court finding. Its weight will depend on how the court reads the contract and the booking materials.

The class sizes and damages figures in the reporting describe what the plaintiffs seek. They are not verified counts of affected passengers or amounts owed.

For travelers searching this topic, the practical question is simple: did you pay for a window seat that had no window? Answering it requires checking the specific seat on the specific flight, not relying on a general label.
