Apple’s China market-share decline was real in Q2 2024, but it was a period-specific result—not proof of a permanent retreat. Two possible counterweights were identified at the time: Apple Intelligence and a foldable iPhone. By October 8, 2026, Apple’s China shipments had improved, but the evidence does not show that either idea caused the rebound: Apple Intelligence remained unavailable in China, and its first foldable iPhone was announced but had not yet gone on sale there.
What the original China market-share decline showed
In Q2 2024, mainland China’s smartphone market grew 10% year over year, while Apple ranked sixth among vendors and held 14% share after a two-percentage-point decline. These were Canalys estimates reported by 9to5Mac, rather than figures directly verified here against Canalys’s own release. The pressure was not simply about selling premium phones. Chinese competitors were improving high-end hardware and software, using local supply chains, and developing AI and foldable devices. Lucas Zhong, a Canalys research analyst quoted by 9to5Mac, said Chinese vendors’ high-end strategies and collaboration with local supply chains were paying off in hardware and software features. He pointed to HONOR’s Magic V3 as a foldable using generative AI to improve the user experience. That was context for the competition Apple faced, not evidence that any one feature alone caused Apple’s share decline.
The two possible counterweights: AI and foldables
Apple Intelligence in China
The 2024 argument was that Apple could make its AI features relevant to Chinese buyers by localizing Apple Intelligence for China. That was a forward-looking possibility, not a product already available in the market. As of October 8, 2026, Apple said Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features would not be available in China while it worked through regulatory requirements. The foldable iPhone
Apple’s second prospective opportunity was to enter the foldable category rather than leave that hardware format to competitors. On September 9, 2026, Apple announced iPhone Duo, listing China among its launch markets and scheduling availability to begin October 23, 2026. As of October 8, it was forthcoming, so its actual China sales, buyer response, and effect on Apple’s share were not yet established. What changed in Apple’s China performance by 2026
There is evidence of a stronger period for Apple, but it should be read as a quarter’s shipment performance rather than a proven lasting reversal. IDC’s preliminary Q2 2026 estimates put Apple at 18.1% of China smartphone shipments, up from 13.9% in Q2 2025. Apple shipments rose 24.4% year over year even as the overall market fell 4.3%. IDC attributed Apple’s relative strength in part to steady pricing while Android rivals raised prices, targeted promotions, strong brand pull, and buyers bringing purchases forward after Apple signaled second-half price increases. A separate measure points in the same favorable direction for a specific model. Counterpoint Research’s China carrier and retail panel estimated that iPhone 17 sold 110.7% more units in its first five months in China than iPhone 16 sold in its first five months. The same comparison found iPhone 16 down 38.9% against iPhone 15 over equivalent five-month windows. Counterpoint describes these figures as sell-through estimates—consumer purchases rather than shipments—and says they may be revised. The broader market remained unsettled. IDC estimated approximately 69 million China smartphone shipments in Q1 2026, down 3.3% year over year, while premium demand for Huawei and Apple remained resilient; component costs and supply constraints weighed on the market. Counterpoint separately reported that China smartphone sales fell 23% year over year in January 2026, with Apple the only major brand it reported as growing year over year. How to judge whether the trend has really reversed
For a clear comparison, separate quarterly vendor shipments from model sell-through. IDC’s share figures count shipments in a quarter; Counterpoint’s iPhone comparisons estimate consumer purchases over matching launch windows. A strong model launch can coexist with a different vendor-share result, and neither one measurement nor one quarter establishes a durable reversal.
The two proposed catalysts also have different timelines. Apple Intelligence must first become available in China before its local adoption can be assessed. The foldable’s scheduled China availability creates a later test: whether consumers buy it and whether those purchases materially affect Apple’s results. Until there is evidence on those outcomes, Apple’s Q2 2026 shipment improvement is the observed change; AI and the foldable remain possible influences on what comes next, not demonstrated causes.
