The Boeing Business Jet 787 (BBJ 787) is Boeing Business Jets’ VIP version of the 787 Dreamliner, offered in three sizes: the -8, -9 and -10. Its headline figures for range, cabin size and hourly operating cost come from Boeing brochure assumptions, not guarantees for any particular flight or owner. The finished VIP interior is installed by a completion center the customer chooses.
What the BBJ 787 is
The BBJ 787 is a twin-engine widebody airliner derivative. The “jumbo” in the popular name is a colloquial nickname. The aircraft is not a Boeing 747, which has four engines and a different fuselage family. Boeing’s BBJ 787 material covers the -8, -9 and -10, which share the 787 design and differ mainly in fuselage length, cabin area and cargo volume.
The three variants compared
Boeing’s BBJ 787 brochure (2022 copyright) lists the figures below. The range column is a design figure for 25 passengers under the assumptions described in the next section. It is not a route guarantee.
| Variant | 25-passenger design range | Cabin area | Cargo volume | Published variable operating cost per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBJ 787-8 | 9,960 nmi | 2,340 ft² | 4,397 ft³ | $10,320 |
| BBJ 787-9 | 9,475 nmi | 2,688 ft² | 5,452 ft³ | $10,910 |
| BBJ 787-10 | 9,025 nmi | 3,002 ft² | 6,178 ft³ | $11,465 |
Boeing’s current BBJ 787 product page headlines a maximum range of 9,960 nmi for the family. That figure matches the -8 in the brochure. The -9 and -10 are shorter-range under the same assumptions, so the headline should not be read as applying to every variant.
#1 Best Overall
- Realistic airplane model: Officially licensed by Boeing 787 with authentic, highly detailed markings and designs accurate to the real plane
- Toy airplane for kids: This must-have for the young aviator in your life includes a single toy plane with rolling wheels and authentic livery
- Size: Plane model measures approximately 5.75 inches in length with a 5- inch wingspan, perfectly sized for easy display and handling
- Quality materials: Die-cast metal airplanes with plastic parts, no assembly required
- Let your imagination fly: Daron airplanes have brought smiles to kids and collectors since 1990 as America’s source of aviation-related collectibles and transportation themed toys
What the range figures assume
The brochure bases its range figures on:
- 25 passengers and their baggage
- NBAA rules
- 50% annual winds in the limiting direction
- a 3% airway allowance
- nominal fuel consumption
- a 200 nmi alternate
Usable range on a real flight depends on the route, payload, weather, fuel reserves and cabin configuration. A heavier load or a headwind-heavy route can cut the distance a given aircraft can fly below the brochure figure. Use the table to compare variants with each other, not to plan a specific trip.
Cabin size and comfort features
Cabin area is the clearest difference between variants. The -10 offers 3,002 ft² against 2,340 ft² on the -8. The brochure figure does not show how that space is divided, and the division is set by the completion center’s layout.
Boeing describes the following comfort features. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of passenger comfort or fatigue.

- Cabin altitude. Boeing describes a low cabin-altitude system that holds cabin altitude to 6,000 ft at maximum cruise altitude. The brochure lists 6,000 ft as the maximum cabin altitude for all three variants.
- Windows. Electronically dimmable windows can be controlled individually or together.
- Climate. Boeing cites improved humidity and temperature control.
- Ride. Smooth Ride Technology uses sensors to detect turbulence, and flight-control surfaces are moved to counter air disturbances.
Who installs the VIP interior
The airframe and the finished cabin are separate stages of the same aircraft. Boeing’s February 5, 2014 press release states: “A completion center of the customer’s choosing installs the jet’s VIP interior.” That sentence is Boeing’s release wording, not a quote from a named executive.
In practice, the customer chooses the completion center, and the layout, private rooms, seating and finishes are specified through that center. Boeing Business Jets’ home page directs visitors to a global network of BBJ industry partners. Independent completion specialists also advertise completion management and refurbishment. Those listings are not endorsements by Boeing and do not confirm availability for any particular airframe.
A photographed interior is therefore one customer’s example, not a standard fit-out for the fleet.

- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- The model measures 7"H x 12"L x 15.25"W
- Recommended age is 14 and up
What the operating-cost figures do and do not cover
The brochure lists published variable operating costs per flight hour of $10,320 (-8), $10,910 (-9) and $11,465 (-10). These are estimates from the 2022-copyright brochure. They are not current quotes from Boeing or any owner, and the brochure material does not break down which costs are included.
Variable cost is one layer of operating a business jet. The per-hour figure does not capture the purchase or lease price, completion costs, crew, hangar space, insurance or fixed overheads. The brochure does not give those figures.

Two dated Boeing announcements frame the program’s history:
- February 5, 2014: Boeing announced two BBJ 787-8 deliveries and described the customer-selected completion model.
- October 22, 2019: Boeing announced an order for two 787-9 aircraft for an unnamed VIP customer. At that time Boeing said BBJ had 16 orders for the 787 variant. That count is a 2019 snapshot, not a current order book.
The 2019 release cited long range, a spacious cabin, lower cabin altitude, larger windows, cleaner and higher-humidity air, and a quieter cabin as selling points. These are Boeing’s marketing claims.
How to compare BBJ 787 variants
Set the same basis for every option before comparing:
- Passenger count and mission. The range figures assume 25 passengers, so a lighter or heavier typical load changes the comparison.
- Route profile and reserves. Measure each route against the brochure’s stated assumptions.
- Cabin area and cargo volume. Confirm the planned interior layout with the completion center, since the brochure figures do not show it.
- Operating cost basis. Ask for the methodology and date behind any per-hour figure.
- Schedule and support. Delivery timing, completion timeline and support network are not quantified consistently in Boeing’s material. Ask prospective operators and completion centers for specifics.
Without a stated passenger count, route, interior plan and cost basis, no variant is the right choice on its own. The -8 has the longest brochure range, and the -10 has the most cabin space and cargo volume.
