As of October 8, 2026, Alphabet has not announced a stock split for 2026, and none of the court orders reviewed requires Alphabet to break up. Its most recent split was a 20-for-one split effective July 15, 2022. The two questions are separate. A stock split is a decision Alphabet makes about its share count. A breakup would be a remedy a court might impose in an antitrust case against Google LLC, Alphabet’s subsidiary, and no such remedy is scheduled.
Alphabet’s split history
The only split the official sources establish is the 2022 split. Alphabet announced it on February 1, 2022, set a record date of July 1, 2022, and executed it on July 15, 2022. It applied to Class A, Class B, and Class C shares at a ratio of 20 new shares for each share held. It was carried out as a one-time special stock dividend, so shareholders received 19 additional shares for every share they already owned, rather than a sale or exchange.
Alphabet’s 2022 annual report describes the transaction this way:
“On July 15, 2022, the company executed a 20-for-one stock split with a record date of July 1, 2022, effected in the form of a one-time special stock dividend on each share of the company’s Class A, Class B, and Class C stock.”

That sentence is a historical statement from the company. It is not a forecast of further splits.
GOOG and GOOGL are share classes, not separate companies
Alphabet’s two most-quoted tickers represent different classes of stock in one company. The voting rights below come from the 2022 annual report.
Rank #2

| Share class | Ticker | Voting rights | Covered by 2022 split |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class A | GOOGL | One vote per share | Yes |
| Class B | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Ten votes per share | Yes |
| Class C | GOOG | No voting rights except where required by law | Yes |
Because the classes differ in voting power, a holder of GOOG and a holder of GOOGL have the same economic claim on the company but different votes. Neither ticker signals that a split or a separation is underway.
Why a split and a breakup are different processes
Readers often merge the two questions because both would affect Alphabet’s share structure or business organization. They run through entirely different channels.
| Question | Stock split | Breakup through antitrust remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | Alphabet’s board and management | A federal court, after litigation and any appeals |
| What changes | Number of shares outstanding and price per share | Business structure or conduct, only if a court orders it |
| Status in the sources reviewed | Last split effective July 15, 2022; no 2026 split announced | No order reviewed requires a breakup; appeals are pending in the search case |
| Public signal to watch | Company announcement and SEC filings | Court orders, appellate filings, and DOJ case pages |
A split does not make a breakup more likely, and a lawsuit does not set a split timetable. The two processes can run at the same time without affecting each other.
The two antitrust cases
Google faces two separate federal antitrust matters. Each has its own findings, remedies, and procedural status, so an outcome in one should not be read into the other.

Search case (filed 2020)
This case concerns search and search advertising. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K reports that the final judgment was entered in December 2025, that Alphabet appealed in January 2026, and that the Department of Justice and the states appealed in February 2026. The judgment imposes behavioral remedies. These include restrictions on certain distribution arrangements, along with data sharing and search and ad syndication requirements.
The DOJ’s summary of the September 2, 2025 remedies decision says the judgment prohibits certain exclusive distribution contracts and requires data sharing and syndication. It does not describe a forced divestiture of Chrome or Android. The DOJ case docket lists compliance and status filings, including ones dated September 17, 2026.

Advertising technology case (filed 2023)
This case concerns Google’s advertising technology. Alphabet’s 2025 filing describes an April 2025 decision that went both ways. The court found that Google’s publisher tools unlawfully excluded rivals. It rejected the claims about advertiser tools and acquisitions. The DOJ docket lists remedies proceedings for this case. The sources reviewed do not establish a final remedy order, so the ad-tech matter should be treated as still open.

If Alphabet announced a future split, it would change the number of shares and the price per share in proportion. Each shareholder’s percentage ownership and the total value of the holding would stay the same at the moment of the split. The 2022 split followed that pattern. A split is a bookkeeping change, not evidence about the company’s business prospects or legal exposure.
How to check for a new split or a legal change
- Check Alphabet’s investor relations site and its press releases for any announcement of a stock split or change to share classes.
- Search Alphabet’s filings on SEC EDGAR. Current reports (Form 8-K) and periodic reports (Forms 10-Q and 10-K) are where a material corporate action would appear.
- For the antitrust cases, open the DOJ’s case pages for the search and ad-tech matters and read the docket entries. Treat the DOJ’s summaries as guides only; the court orders control the actual obligations.
- Watch the appeals in the search case. An appellate stay, a decision, or a modification of the remedies would change the legal status described above.
What the evidence does not show
- No official announcement of a 2026 stock split appeared in the sources reviewed, and these sources do not rule out an announcement made after their check date.
- No executive statement about a planned 2026 split was found in the sources reviewed.
- No published figure measures the likelihood of either a 2026 split or a breakup. Any estimate would be speculation.
- The 2022 split does not make another split more likely. Its timing and purpose are specific to that year’s board decision.
Sources and check date
The main sources are Alphabet’s 2022 annual report and 2022 results release, Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K, and the DOJ’s case pages for the search and ad-tech matters. Company filings report Alphabet’s own disclosures. DOJ pages report government actions and docket contents. Status was checked as of October 8, 2026, and legal status can change quickly.
