Qiddiya’s gaming and esports district could pay off as a long-term tourism and industry investment, but public figures so far do not show whether it will earn a financial return. Saudi Arabia has announced a substantial venue buildout and ambitious visitor goals; event attendance offers an early sign of interest, not proof of recurring demand, revenue or economic benefit.
What is Qiddiya’s gaming and esports district?
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) describes the district as a hub for competitive esports, casual gaming and digital entertainment. Its project page lists four arenas, 183,100 square metres of gaming and interactive entertainment space, and more than 30 global gaming brands establishing regional headquarters in Qiddiya City. These are project descriptions and plans, not independently verified evidence that the facilities are complete or operating (PIF’s Qiddiya project page).
When Qiddiya announced the district in December 2023, it described four venues with more than 73,000 seats combined, including one planned arena with 5,300 seats (Qiddiya’s launch announcement). Announced capacity is not the same as completed capacity, attendance or ticket sales.
What is Saudi Arabia trying to achieve?
The district is part of a national effort to build a domestic gaming and esports industry, rather than a stand-alone venue investment. Saudi Arabia’s National Gaming and Esports Strategy set targets for 2030 of about SAR 50 billion in direct and indirect GDP contribution, 39,000 jobs, more than 30 globally competitive games made in domestic studios, and a top-three global ranking for professional esports players (National Gaming and Esports Strategy). Those are national ecosystem targets; they are not outcomes attributed solely to Qiddiya.

PIF has separately said the district aims to draw 10 million annual visits to its venues by 2030 and incubate 30 leading game-development companies. The same PIF account describes national strategy aims of 250 companies, 39,000 jobs and $13.3 billion in GDP contribution (PIF’s 2025 announcement). The 10 million figure is a district ambition, while the employment and GDP figures concern the national strategy.
What evidence suggests there could be demand?
A large domestic gaming audience
PwC reported an estimate of 23.5 million gaming enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia—67% of the population—for 2023 (PwC’s 2024 outlook). That indicates a potentially broad audience for gaming, but it is a 2023 estimate, not a current headcount, and it does not establish how many people will travel to Qiddiya or pay to attend its venues.

Early event attendance
In a July 2026 announcement about expanded collaboration at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026, the Esports Foundation and Qiddiya reported more than 42,000 visitors at Qiddiya Arena during EWC 2025 and a further 216,000 at the separate PlayLife activation (EWC and Qiddiya’s announcement). These event-specific counts suggest reach, but they do not say how many visitors were unique, paying or repeat attendees. Nor do they establish the recurring attendance or revenue of a permanent district. The two counts describe separate experiences and should not be treated as a count of unique people.
Why the headline numbers do not prove a return
Some forecasts concern Qiddiya City as a whole, not its gaming district. A 2023 Saudi Vision 2030 report projected that the city could attract 48 million annual visitors, create more than 300,000 jobs and contribute $36 billion per year to the Saudi economy by 2030 (Saudi Vision 2030’s Qiddiya profile). Those are city-wide projections, not measured results or district-specific forecasts.

The figures answer different questions: strategy targets describe national ambitions, PIF’s 10 million visits figure is a district goal, event counts are reported attendance at particular activations, and the 48 million figure is a projection for the wider city. They cannot be added together or used as a substitute for district revenue, costs or realized economic impact.
The available public figures do not establish a district-level capital budget, operating costs, completed construction schedule, revenue model, audited attendance series or realized economic return. They also do not show whether announced company headquarters and incubation ambitions have produced lasting local operations, exports or jobs. Without those measures, a financial verdict—positive or negative—would go beyond the evidence.

How to judge whether Qiddiya pays off
A useful assessment needs recurring operating evidence as well as delivery against the announced plans. Four tests matter:
- Delivery: Do the arenas and interactive spaces open and operate at the announced scale?
- Demand quality: How many annual visits are paid, how often do events take place, how much do visitors spend, how many return, and how many come from outside the local market?
- Industry additionality: Do game companies maintain operations in Saudi Arabia, hire and train local talent, and make or publish commercially successful games there?
- Public value and cost: How do capital and operating costs compare with recurring private revenue, local jobs and independently measured economic spillovers?
What the evidence supports today
Qiddiya has a coherent strategic rationale: use entertainment venues and industry support to attract visitors while helping build a Saudi gaming ecosystem. The announcements and reported event attendance make that bet plausible, but they do not establish that it will pay off. The answer depends on whether the district opens, sustains paid demand, builds durable local businesses and generates benefits that justify its costs.
