But the separate question of whether fresh notes were distributed is less clear: a March 5 report said an SBP official confirmed they would not be issued, while a March 17 report attributed claims of supply to commercial banks to market sources. The reports do not establish a definitive, formally announced distribution outcome.
What did the viral notice claim?
The purported notice, titled “Non-Availability of Fresh Currency Notes for Eid-ul-Fitr 2026,” claimed fresh notes would not be issued, the 8877 SMS service would be unavailable, and people should use digital payments, according to ProPakistani’s March 4 report. The title and contents should be treated as claims in a circulating notice, not as an authentic SBP announcement.
ProPakistani reported that an SBP representative denied issuing it. Gadinsider reported the following statement from an SBP spokesperson: “The notification being shared on social media is not true,” and also said an official confirmed that fresh notes would not be issued for Eid. What was reported about fresh-note availability?
The reports make two distinct claims on different dates. On March 5, Gadinsider reported an official confirmation that fresh notes would not be issued. On March 17, ProPakistani reported that market sources said fresh notes had been supplied to commercial banks. The available reports therefore support a clear conclusion about the notice’s authenticity, but not a fully reconciled account of whether, when, or how fresh notes reached banks. No formal SBP announcement resolving the conflicting distribution reports is established here.
Does the Eid holiday circular confirm note distribution?
No. SBP’s 2026 public-holiday circular said the State Bank would be closed on March 20 and 21 for Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Those are the dates stated for the bank’s closure; the circular does not establish when Eid was observed or whether fresh notes were distributed. See SBP’s 2026 holiday circular.

What does SBP’s older policy say?
A July 24, 2013 SBP circular describes a longstanding arrangement under which SBP Banking Services Corporation makes arrangements to supply commercial banks with fresh notes for onward issuance to the public on Eids and other occasions. It also sets historical conditions for small-denomination packets: one packet each of Rs.10 and Rs.20 per person, subject to the circular’s stated restrictions and CNIC documentation requirements. ProPakistani’s report directs readers to SBP’s formal communication channels for confirmation. If a notice makes a specific claim about an SMS service, eligibility, dates, or bank availability, check whether SBP itself has published that instruction before acting on it.
