Why Is My Card Declined on Crypto.com? Quick Fixes by Transaction Type

A Crypto.com merchant-card decline and an outside card rejected during app funding are different problems. Identify the transaction first, then follow the relevant checks.

First identify which card was declined: a Crypto.com-issued card used to pay a merchant, or an outside debit or credit card used to add funds or buy crypto in the app. The fixes differ. For the Crypto.com USD Card, start by checking its in-app status and available USD balance, then verify the transaction type and merchant, PIN, or online card details as appropriate.

Crypto.com USD Card declined at a merchant: check these first

Crypto.com’s decline checklist is specifically for its USD Card; it should not be treated as a universal checklist for every Crypto.com card, region, or payment flow. The help article, dated September 24, 2025, lists these causes:

  • The card is blocked. Check its status in the Crypto.com app.
  • The payment method is unsupported. Crypto.com says the USD Card operates exclusively in credit mode. A purchase attempted using another method may be declined.
  • The merchant is charging in installments. Installment purchases are not supported on a prepaid card.
  • Available USD is insufficient. Check the balance available at the time of the transaction.
  • The merchant or transaction category is unsupported. A merchant’s MCC (Merchant Category Code) may fall outside the card’s usage policy.
  • The PIN is incorrect. This can affect an in-store transaction.
  • Online card details are wrong. Recheck the card number, name, expiration date, and CVV.

Work through the checks that fit the failed payment: status and balance first, then whether the merchant and transaction type are supported; for an in-person purchase, check the PIN, and for an online purchase, re-enter the card details. If it still declines, contact Crypto.com support through in-app chat or chat.crypto.com and provide the transaction amount, merchant name, and any error displayed by the terminal. (Crypto.com Help Center)

Check whether the card works for that kind of transaction

A virtual Crypto.com card can be used for online spending after top-up. In-person point-of-sale and ATM transactions require a physical card. Virtual cards do not need activation; physical cards do. If a shop terminal or ATM rejected the payment, confirm you used a physical card and, if so, that it is activated. (Crypto.com Help Center)

If an outside card was declined while funding Crypto.com

If the failed payment was an external debit or credit card used to buy crypto or add money in the app, use the guidance for that specific funding route—not the USD Card merchant-decline checklist.

Buying crypto with an external card

For its credit/debit-card purchase guidance, Crypto.com notes that issuer restrictions on international online payments or crypto-related transactions may matter. The cited guidance specifically mentions India; do not assume the same restrictions apply elsewhere. If the issuer is rejecting the transaction, contact the bank that issued the card. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.

Top-up to a US USD Account

For this particular US account top-up route, Crypto.com says a failed or late 3DS response or issuer risk policies can lead to rejection. If the issuer’s restrictions are responsible, contact the card issuer. These explanations are specific to this top-up flow and do not automatically explain a declined prepaid-card purchase. If the card is lost or the transaction looks suspicious

A lost card or a transaction you do not recognize is a security issue, not an ordinary payment troubleshooting problem. Freeze a lost card in the app immediately and contact Crypto.com support. A replacement-card fee may apply. Crypto.com also says its processing platform may decline suspicious activity—for example, an online purchase above your average ticket at a new merchant. Do not keep retrying a transaction you suspect is fraudulent; secure the card and contact official support. (Crypto.com Help Center)
