There is no publicly established, definitive answer to why Jeff Bezos continues to own The Washington Post. The record explains why he bought it in 2013: the Graham family wanted the newspaper to have a better chance to thrive amid industry upheaval, and Bezos offered a long-term owner willing to invest and experiment. That original rationale is not proof of his private motive for keeping it today, and the sources cited here do not establish a current plan to sell.
Why did Bezos buy The Washington Post in 2013?
The Washington Post Company announced on August 5, 2013, that it had agreed to sell its newspaper publishing businesses, including the Post, to Bezos for $250 million, subject to normal working-capital adjustments. The sale closed on October 1, 2013, according to the paper’s corporate history. This was Bezos’s personal purchase, not an acquisition by Amazon.
Donald Graham, then chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Company, said the family and board weighed whether a different owner could give the paper a better future after years of familiar newspaper-industry challenges. He said the Post could have survived and been profitable under the prior company, but the goal was more than survival. Graham praised Bezos’s long-term approach and said the choice was intended to give the paper a better chance.
The pressures were significant. In 2013, the Post reported that newspaper-division operating revenue had fallen 44% over the prior six years and that daily and Sunday print circulation each dropped a further 7% in the first half of 2013. Those are historical figures, not measures of the paper’s present finances or readership. Contemporary coverage described private ownership as creating more room to experiment without the immediate-return pressure associated with public shareholders.

Bezos framed his commitment around readers. In the 2013 announcement, he wrote, “Our duty to readers will continue to be the heart of the Post.” Speaking to staff that year, as the Post reported, he said, “The duty of the paper is to the readers, not the owners.” Those statements explain the public principles he invoked when taking ownership; they do not settle why he has retained it.
What has Bezos said about the paper since?
In June 2024, Bezos told senior editors, “You have my full commitment on maintaining the quality, ethics, and standards we all believe in,” according to The Washington Post’s report. The report also quoted him saying the business needed to change while its standards would not. These are dated public assurances, not independent proof about every editorial decision or a direct explanation of his continued ownership.

In a signed essay published October 28, 2024, Bezos defended the decision not to make a presidential endorsement, arguing that endorsements can create “a perception of non-independence.” He also wrote, “Presidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election.” That essay gives his stated rationale for that specific editorial-policy decision; it is not a stated reason for keeping the newspaper.
What do the business figures show—and what don’t they show?
The Post’s June 2024 account of the business described expansion and experimentation under Bezos followed by strain. It reported that the company said it lost $77 million in 2023 and had lost half its audience since 2020. The same report said digital subscriptions peaked at 3 million in January 2021, stood at 2.7 million at the end of 2021, and had not rebounded; it reported 139 million monthly digital visitors in March 2020 and about 58 million in November 2022. These are historical figures reported in 2024, not current subscription, audience, or loss figures.

Such pressures make the ownership question understandable, but they cannot reveal Bezos’s private calculation. The Post is privately held, so its current financial picture is not as visible as that of a public company. A February 2026 Atlantic interview discussed the limited public visibility into its finances and framed support or retrenchment as choices. Neither that discussion nor the historical business figures establish what Bezos privately intends now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be concluded about why he still owns it?
The evidence supports a distinction between the reason for buying the Post and a present-day reason for retaining it. The Graham family publicly chose Bezos because it believed his resources, patience, and willingness to experiment could help the paper thrive. Bezos has publicly emphasized the paper’s duty to readers and, in 2024, his commitment to its standards. Those facts provide context, but they do not establish a definitive current motive such as stewardship, political advantage, or business strategy.

Nor do the cited sources establish an announced intention to sell. Without a direct, current statement from Bezos or other reliable evidence about his plans, the most accurate answer is that he remains the owner, while his private reason for continuing to own the Post is not publicly known.
