Players spend money on skins for reasons beyond changing how a game looks: a favorite appearance can feel personal, mark an achievement, help someone fit in with friends, signal status, or offer something new. These motives can overlap, and a skin’s gameplay effect depends on the specific game and item.
What makes a skin worth buying?
A skin can matter even when it does not improve a character’s abilities. Players may spend to customize something they use often, celebrate progress, match a group, or stand out. A 2025 qualitative study by József Koles identified personal and achievement goals, social and belonging needs, prestige and status signaling, and novelty seeking in interviews with 20 active players living in France. Those interviews describe possible motivations; they do not show how common each one is among players overall. Read the study.
- Personal expression: Choosing a look can make a frequently used character or item feel more like the player’s own.
- Achievement: A cosmetic can serve as a visible marker of progress or a milestone.
- Belonging: Matching friends, a team, or a community can make an item socially meaningful.
- Status: A distinctive or prestigious-looking cosmetic can signal taste, experience, or access.
- Novelty: A new appearance can refresh familiar play without changing the game’s basic activity.
These are not mutually exclusive player types: one purchase may satisfy several motives at once.
Are skins always just cosmetic?
No. The label “skin” does not by itself establish whether an item affects play. Koles’s study reports that players may perceive some cosmetics as advantageous, including clothing or armor that makes a character less visible. That is a game- and item-specific possibility, not evidence that skins generally provide a competitive edge. Check the item’s effects and the rules of the game in question rather than assuming every skin is purely visual or pay-to-win.

Why do rare skins and loot boxes appeal?
Rarity can make a virtual reward feel more valuable and exciting. In two experiments, Larche and coauthors found that rarer loot-box rewards were rated as more valuable, arousing, rewarding, and urge-inducing. In the second experiment, rare rewards also produced stronger measures of physiological arousal and reward response. The findings help explain why uncertainty and anticipation can be appealing; they do not show that every skin buyer is compulsive or that a direct purchase has the same effect. Read the study.
Buying a known skin versus opening a loot box
| Route | What the player receives | What drives the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Direct purchase | A selected, known item | The player can choose a look that fits personal, social, achievement, or status goals. |
| Loot box | A randomized reward | Uncertainty and the possibility of a rare reward can add anticipation and excitement. |
These are different purchase mechanisms. Research about randomized rewards should not be treated as evidence about all direct cosmetic purchases.

What the evidence says about how common these purchases are
Cosmetic monetization was widespread in one historical Steam sample, but the figures measure exposure to games, not skin buying. Zendle, Meyer, and Ballou analyzed the 463 most-played Steam desktop games from 2010 to 2019. By April 2019, 85.89% of players in that sample played games with cosmetic microtransactions, and 71.2% played games with loot boxes. These are not current global figures, estimates of how many people bought skins, or measures of spending. Read the study.
The cited studies do not establish a current, representative figure for how many people buy skins, how much they spend, or which motive is most frequent across games and regions. The 20-player interview study offers insight into reasons people may buy cosmetics, not population-wide percentages.

How loot boxes differ from skin gambling
A loot box is a randomized way to receive an in-game item; skin gambling is a separate activity involving skins as stakes or value in gambling-related contexts. The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s 2025 evidence review says loot boxes are generally not considered gambling in a legal sense in most jurisdictions, including the UK, because prizes typically lack real-world monetary value outside the game and primarily enhance the in-game experience. That is the review’s description of legal treatment, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction or product. The review also summarizes research associating loot-box purchases with later skin-gambling involvement; association does not mean every loot-box or skin buyer gambles. Read the UK review.
