The launch price did not rise. That is a narrow finding: it tells you what Nintendo chose to charge at launch, not what tariffs cost the company, and it does not establish the price you would pay today in October 2026.
What Nintendo announced, and when
- April 2, 2025: Nintendo announced the Switch 2 and its U.S. launch price of $449.99.
- April 3, 2025: Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser gave an interview to The Verge. Nintendo Life later reported his comment: “The news is fresh, and like many companies right now, we are actively assessing what the impact may be.” That is a secondary report of his remark, so treat the wording as reported rather than as a formal company statement.
- April 18, 2025: Nintendo delayed U.S. retail pre-orders to assess tariffs and evolving market conditions, and said that at launch “the price for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will remain as announced on April 2 at $449.99, and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle will remain as announced at $499.99.”
- June 5, 2025: The Switch 2 launched in the U.S. at the announced prices.
The April 18 statement is the primary source for the price decision. It came from Nintendo as a company, not from a named executive.

What the price hold supports, and what it does not
What the announcement supports
- Nintendo had a window to change the price before pre-orders opened, and it kept the console and bundle prices as announced.
- The company’s public statement tied the delay to tariffs and market conditions, but it did not say the price would rise because of tariffs.
- A launch-price decision made under tariff uncertainty is the most direct evidence available for the question “did tariffs raise the price on day one?” The answer from Nintendo’s own record is no.
What the announcement does not establish
- It does not prove tariffs had no cost. Nintendo did not quantify tariff costs, state how much of any cost it absorbed, or say how it weighed margins against price.
- It does not promise the price will never change. Nintendo said future product price changes remained possible.
- It does not describe today’s price. The statement is from April 2025 and covers the launch period only.
- It does not identify where individual units were made or how they were classified. Tariff exposure depends on those facts, and the announcement does not address them.
Accessories and later price changes
The hold was not a blanket freeze. Nintendo’s April 18 statement said that “Nintendo Switch 2 accessories will experience price adjustments from those announced on April 2 due to changes in market conditions.” It also said that other Nintendo product price changes were possible. If you are budgeting for a Switch 2 setup, the accessory line is the part of the 2025 statement most likely to differ from the launch figures.
Tariff policy changed after launch
The U.S. Trade Representative’s official action index lists tariff actions through 2026, including one titled “Ending Certain Tariff Actions” dated February 20, 2026. That index is useful for sequencing policy changes, but it does not state the tariff rate that applies to a particular console shipment. A policy action is not the same as a product-level tariff determination, so the index alone cannot tell you whether a Switch 2 unit now costs more or less to import.

How tariffs can reach a console’s price
For a device like the Switch 2, tariffs are paid on imported goods and then the company decides what to do with that cost. It can absorb the cost by accepting lower margins, pass it on through a higher retail price, or pass some of it on through changes to products, bundles or accessories. Those choices are the pass-through question. Nintendo’s 2025 statements answer the launch-price part of it, but they do not show how any cost was split.
Associated Press reporting from the time quoted games industry researcher Joost van Dreunen on pressure on console margins. That is contextual expert analysis, not evidence of Nintendo’s actual costs or pricing plans.

How to check the current price yourself
- Start with Nintendo’s own U.S. website and note the current suggested retail price for the Switch 2 console and for the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle, and the date you checked.
- Check whether a retailer listing is for the console alone or for the bundle. Compare like with like before comparing prices.
- Check the accessories you need separately, since Nintendo has already said those prices would change.
- Compare retailer price, stock and return terms, not just the headline price.
- If you want to know whether a specific tariff applies, check the current tariff rules and the product’s classification with official U.S. sources. A general news report will not settle that question.
Use the 2025 figures as the launch baseline. Use today’s Nintendo listing and retailer prices to decide what you will pay.
