Why United Airlines Is Retiring Its Boeing 767s by 2030

United’s plan to retire its 767s by 2030 is driven by fleet modernization, lower projected fuel and maintenance costs, and a better fit between aircraft size and route demand.

United plans to remove its Boeing 767s from the fleet by 2030, replacing older widebodies with Boeing 787s as part of a broader modernization effort. The airline’s stated case is lower fuel and maintenance costs, simpler fleet operations and aircraft better matched to route demand—not a claim that the 767s are unsafe or suddenly unusable. The 2030 date is a plan announced in 2022, not confirmation that the fleet has already been retired.

Why is United retiring its 767s?

United’s explanation is primarily economic and operational. In its December 2022 announcement, the airline said new 787s would address widebody replacement needs while improving fuel-burn and maintenance economics. Those are United’s projected benefits; they do not establish identical savings on every aircraft or route.

The decision also fits a wider effort to modernize an aging widebody fleet. In a 2022 SEC filing, United said approximately 120 widebody aircraft in its fleet would reach age 30 by the end of the 787 delivery period. That figure concerns widebodies generally, not just the 767s, and does not mean every 767 was 30 years old.

Matching aircraft size to route demand

United has also argued that the right aircraft size for each market can matter more than buying from only one manufacturer. Its 2018 fleet FAQ described a planned transition from three international widebody types—the 747, 777 and 767—to two—the A350 and 787. The point was not simply to replace each old aircraft with a like-for-like model: a smaller number of fleet types can reduce operating complexity, while different aircraft sizes let the airline match capacity to markets.

Range and emissions claims

United’s 2018 FAQ said its 787 aircraft offered almost 32% more range than its then-current 767s. This is the airline’s historical comparison, not a universal specification for every 787 variant or a guarantee about a particular route.

In its 2022 order announcement, United estimated that the new aircraft would deliver up to 25% lower carbon emissions per seat than the older aircraft they were expected to replace. That is a company estimate, not a verified result for every flight. The range and emissions figures come from separate United documents and describe different comparisons.

What is replacing United’s Boeing 767s?

The centerpiece is a firm order for 100 Boeing 787s, with options for 100 more. United scheduled deliveries from 2024 through 2032 and said approximately 100 aircraft in the order were expected to replace older 767s and 777s. The order also gives the airline room to grow international flying. It does not specify a one-for-one 767-to-787 replacement plan.

United’s July 2024 investor presentation identified the 787-10 as an intended replacement for older 767 and 777 aircraft, citing fuel-burn economics and maintenance costs. The presentation described the 787-10 as the largest 787 subfleet type in United’s fleet and suited to high-density medium-haul routes. This is the airline’s stated role for the model, not a final aircraft-by-aircraft assignment.

United said in a March 2026 announcement that it had added 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliners since 2021 as part of its broader modernization program. That update shows the renewal effort continued, but it did not state how many 767s remained or change the retirement target.

When will United retire its 767 fleet?

United announced in December 2022 that it expected all its 767s to be out of the fleet by 2030. The available company announcements do not establish how many were still operating on October 8, 2026, whether United has revised the target, or the retirement date for any individual aircraft. Treat 2030 as the airline’s announced plan, not a confirmed completion date.
