Re:

Why International Airlines Keep Cutting China Flights in 2026: Airspace, Fuel and Demand

Foreign airlines are trimming some China routes mainly because closed Russian airspace lengthens flights and raises costs, while competitors keep flying those routes. Some carriers also cite fuel prices and softer demand.

Foreign airlines are trimming some China routes for reasons that are documented but not universal. The most concrete mechanism is Russian airspace. When carriers cannot overfly it, some Europe–China routings get longer, which raises fuel burn and reduces how many productive hours each aircraft and crew can deliver. Carriers that still fly over Russia can offer shorter journeys and lower operating costs on the same markets. Some airlines also cite softer demand, high jet fuel prices and wider cost pressure. The announced cuts are mostly route-specific and time-limited, and they do not show that every international carrier is leaving China.

Which airlines and which routes are actually changing

“International airlines” covers carriers of many nationalities, with different route rights, network economics and access to airspace. No coordinated industry decision is documented. What exists is a set of route-level choices by individual companies, which is easier to understand when you separate three levels that are often lumped together.

Level What the evidence shows Source and period
All China-bound international capacity 15,992 weekly international passenger flights were planned, up 5.6% year on year, connecting China to 80 countries. These are planned schedule figures, not operated flights. Civil Aviation Administration of China, winter schedule October 26, 2025 to March 28, 2026, CAAC announcement
One airline’s China network SAS said it would not operate direct flights to China in 2025, while Chinese carriers had added capacity on the same routes. SAS, 2025 statement, SAS press release
Individual city pairs IndiGo suspended Shanghai and Air India suspended Delhi–Shanghai for announced windows in mid-2026. Company announcements, dates in the timing section below

A seasonal total can grow while individual airlines drop frequencies or whole routes. Those two things are not in conflict, and a headline about one does not establish the other.

How Russian airspace lengthens China routings

The clearest documented mechanism is routing. SAS says its Copenhagen–Shanghai journey can involve up to two extra hours each way when Russian airspace is unavailable, with higher fuel use and lower aircraft and crew efficiency. That is SAS’s own route example, not a duration that applies to every China route.

Extra flight time affects route economics in three ways:

  • Fuel: a longer track burns more fuel. SAS also cited effects on cargo payload.
  • Aircraft use: each aircraft completes fewer round trips in a day, so the same airframe generates less revenue over a schedule.
  • Crew use: crews spend more hours per trip, which SAS describes as reduced crew efficiency.

EUROCONTROL’s report on Asia-Pacific traffic trends gives a larger illustration on a different route. Its selected example, Helsinki–Tokyo, adds about 3,550 km, four hours and an estimated 20 tonnes of fuel. That is an extreme case and should not be read as a China-route figure. EUROCONTROL report

Whether fares or demand compensate for that extra cost is the decisive question for any single route. The sources do not establish whether they do on China routes, so the cost mechanism explains pressure on an operator, not a fare outcome.

The competitive gap between carriers

The second factor is competitive rather than physical. SAS and IATA both describe Western carriers facing competition from airlines that continue to use Russian airspace, and those carriers can have shorter journey times and lower operating costs on the same markets. IATA’s June 2025 outlook said several European airlines had cut connections to China amid competition from non-European carriers continuing to fly over Russia. That is IATA’s industry-wide assessment, not a list of named routes. IATA Global Outlook for Air Transport, June 2025

SAS Senior Vice President Public Affairs Mads Brandstrup Nielsen put the point this way in SAS’s release: “As long as Russian airspace remains closed, this imbalance will persist. While we remain committed to connecting Scandinavia to Asia, the industry needs a level playing field to ensure long-term sustainability, fair competition, and reliable connectivity for our customers.” That is an airline executive’s view.

A cost gap of this kind shapes relative competitiveness. It does not show that the competing carriers are profitable on these routes, and it does not show that airspace alone decides any single route. This article quotes no aviation regulator or court on the cuts; the statements here come from airlines and an industry association.

Airline-specific reasons

Not every carrier gives the same reason, and the reasons below are attributed to the companies that stated them. SAS’s stated reason is the airspace-driven cost gap described above.

Air India: airspace restrictions and jet fuel

  • Announced network adjustments for June–August 2026 on May 13, 2026, including a temporary suspension of Delhi–Shanghai.
  • Cited continued regional airspace restrictions and record-high jet fuel prices. The reasons quoted here are not described in the sources as closures of Russian airspace.
  • Said more than 1,200 international flights a month would continue across its network, while frequencies on other international routes were also changed.

IndiGo: softer demand and cost conditions

  • Announced temporary suspensions on six international routes on June 4, 2026, including Shanghai.
  • Cited traditionally softer demand in the coming quarter, a challenging cost environment and continued airspace restrictions.
  • Said it retained more than 1,800 weekly international flights after the adjustments. That is the carrier’s own network statement, not an industry total.

These two carriers give different primary reasons. Air India’s statement centers on airspace and fuel, while IndiGo’s centers on demand and cost, so neither should be used to explain the other’s decisions.

Announced windows as of October 8, 2026

Several announced suspensions have stated end dates that have already passed. The table records what each company said. It does not confirm whether service has resumed, so check the airline before relying on any date.

What to check before you rebook or claim a refund

If your booking touches one of these routes, work through the following steps before accepting a replacement or requesting money back.

  1. Confirm the operating carrier and whether your itinerary is nonstop or connecting. The airline selling the ticket and the airline operating the flight can differ.
  2. Match your route and travel date against the airline’s own notice. Suspensions apply to specific windows, so a flight outside that window may not be affected.
  3. Compare total travel time and connection risk for each alternative. Add the cost of any extra hotel night or airport transfer, not just the fare. The sources do not rank replacement carriers, so this comparison is yours to make.
  4. Read the airline’s date-change, re-accommodation and refund terms for your ticket. Air India said it would assist affected customers with alternative feasible flights, free date changes or refunds as applicable. Which of those applies depends on your fare and the airline’s terms, not on the announcement.
  5. Save the cancellation or schedule-change notice, your booking confirmation and every receipt.
  6. If a refund is not paid, ask your card issuer what dispute process applies to the purchase and what deadlines it sets.

Treat any fare you see on China routes as a current search result rather than evidence of a trend. The cuts described above do not, by themselves, tell you what prices will do.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
