Cod can be expensive when catches and quotas limit supply while demand remains strong. FAO GLOBEFISH reported that cod prices increased by 20% during 2025 amid tightening groundfish supply. That market trend helps explain higher prices, but it does not tell you what cod should cost at your local shop: prices also depend on species, origin, product form and location.
What is pushing cod prices up?
Tight supply and quota limits
FAO GLOBEFISH describes tightening supply and sustained high prices for groundfish, particularly cod, as quota reductions constrained availability. Its 2026 market analysis reports that cod prices rose by 20% during 2025. This is a market-level change, not a forecast or a measure of the increase at every retailer. FAO GLOBEFISH’s groundfish analysis
Catch limits can restrict how much fish is harvested from particular stocks. NOAA says U.S. Atlantic cod is subject to rebuilding plans that allow limited harvest. Such management is specific to a fishery; it does not mean every cod stock faces the same restrictions. NOAA Fisheries: Atlantic cod
Not all “cod” is the same market
Atlantic cod and Pacific cod are different species associated with different fisheries. Price comparisons can also refer to very different things: imported frozen fish, fishery landings, or retail products. A lower price in one category does not necessarily mean a shopper can buy that fish for the same amount.

What the published price figures do—and do not—show
The figures below describe specific markets and measures. They are useful context, but none is a universal checkout price.
| Figure | What it measures | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cod prices increased 20% during 2025 | FAO GLOBEFISH market analysis published in 2026 | A reported change in cod prices amid constrained supply, not the price increase at every shop. |
| €6.90/kg, up 3% from 2023 | Average cod unit price in the EU, in EUMOFA’s 2025 edition | An EU market statistic, not a current local retail quote. |
| €5.66/kg | Average unit value for frozen cod imports across major suppliers in EUMOFA’s 2025 edition | An import statistic; it is not the price a consumer necessarily pays. |
| 1.4 million pounds landed, valued at $2.8 million in 2024 | U.S. Atlantic cod commercial landings, reported on NOAA’s 2026 species page | A fishery landing value, not a retail price. |
| Approximately 375 million pounds harvested, valued at $106 million in 2024 | U.S. Pacific cod commercial harvest, reported on NOAA’s 2026 species page | A fishery harvest value, not a retail price. |
For its EU price and import statistics, see EUMOFA’s The EU Fish Market 2025. NOAA’s harvest figures are on its pages for Atlantic cod and Pacific cod.
Why your local price can differ
Retail prices vary with species, origin, fresh or frozen form, the cut and portion size, and the local market. The cited EU averages and U.S. harvest values cannot establish what a particular store charges or break down the retail price into fishing, processing, transport, labor and retailer costs.

Compare products on a like-for-like basis. A fillet portion and a larger frozen pack may differ in cut, usable quantity and packaging, even when both labels say cod. Check the price per unit weight and, where shown, whether it refers to edible or drained weight; glazing and packaging can also affect how much fish you receive for the price.

Alaska pollock is one option to check: FAO reported that plentiful pollock supply partly offset declining cod and other groundfish catches in 2025. That does not establish that pollock will always cost less at a particular shop. Compare the actual unit price and choose based on the fish and product form you want.
Quick Recap
- Check whether the product is Atlantic cod, Pacific cod or pollock.
- Compare the stated origin and whether the fish is fresh or frozen.
- Match the cut and portion size as closely as possible.
- Use the price per unit weight, and check the weight basis and packaging where that information is available.
