Why Elon Musk and Trump Keep Making Up—For Now

Trump and Elon Musk have reasons to repair their relationship, from political usefulness to business interests. Their 2025 feud shows those incentives do not guarantee lasting harmony.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s relationship is not unbreakable: they had a public falling-out in June 2025. But they later reconciled, and on October 8, 2026, Trump praised Musk at a public event. Their political and business interests give them reasons to restore contact after a clash; their history gives no guarantee they will avoid another one.

Did Trump and Elon Musk make up?

Yes, according to the Associated Press, which reported on October 8, 2026, that the two made up months after their 2025 dispute. At a public event, Trump called Musk “a national treasure” and “our modern-day Thomas Edison,” and referred to him as “my friend.” Those comments show public warmth and reconciliation; they do not establish that every disagreement has been resolved or reveal the state of their private relationship. Associated Press, October 8, 2026.

Why could they restore the relationship after a fight?

They have each offered the other something politically useful

Musk publicly backed Trump in the 2024 campaign. The Associated Press reported that Musk spent at least $250 million backing the campaign; that figure describes political support, not a direct personal donation of that amount to Trump. Musk also brought a large online platform and visibility among technology supporters. Trump, in turn, gave Musk a prominent advisory role and access to the White House. These are reasons the alliance could be useful to both men, not proof of their private motives. Associated Press.

Musk’s companies intersect with federal decisions

During the 2025 dispute, Trump threatened to end government contracts and subsidies associated with Musk’s business interests, including SpaceX and Starlink. That episode made clear that federal decisions can matter to Musk’s companies—and that political conflict can put those interests at risk. The overlap gives both men reason to keep channels open, but it does not establish an improper exchange or mean that either depends on the other in every circumstance. Associated Press.

Public access and visibility benefited the alliance

On March 11, 2025, Trump and Musk appeared together at the White House alongside Tesla vehicles; the White House record says Trump purchased a Tesla on the South Lawn. In a May 2025 official interview, Musk described himself as “Tech Support” for Trump and said his role was to provide technology support. He described the DOGE team’s function as helping ensure executive orders were carried out. That transcript records what the men said, not independent proof that Musk controlled the presidency or that every claimed result was achieved. White House, March 11, 2025 and official interview transcript, May 2025.

What caused the 2025 break?

The public rupture followed Musk’s opposition to Trump’s major spending bill in June 2025. Trump said he was disappointed and threatened to end Musk’s government contracts and subsidies. Musk attacked Trump and his policies on X and publicly called for Trump’s impeachment. The Associated Press described the exchange as a rapid public collapse of their political alliance. Trump summed up the uncertainty at the time: “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.” Associated Press, June 2025.

The dispute also had a financial-market dimension. The Associated Press reported that Tesla shares fell more than 14% on June 5, 2025, wiping about $150 billion from the company’s market value amid the feud. The timing documents a market reaction; it does not prove the dispute alone caused the entire decline. Associated Press, June 5, 2025.

Why “won’t break up any time soon” is not a certainty

The evidence supports a pattern of alliance, rupture and reconciliation—not a prediction that another split will not happen. Their shared political and business interests can encourage renewed contact, while policy disagreements and personal attacks can overwhelm those incentives. In May 2025, Trump publicly recounted Musk saying, “You know they’re trying to drive us apart.” That was Trump’s account of a conversation and part of their public alliance narrative; it was not evidence that their relationship could not fail. official interview transcript, May 2025.

Public statements establish how the men presented their relationship at particular moments. They cannot verify private coordination, settle every policy dispute or show how durable the October 2026 thaw will be. The most defensible explanation is that political usefulness, access and business stakes can give them reasons to repair a rupture—without preventing the next one.
