Those circumstances may make it important to investigate itemized deductions and the forms you need; they do not guarantee a larger refund or mean Deluxe is right for every return. The bigger practical issue now is filing method: Intuit says TurboTax Online cannot e-file a 2023 return, so check the current options before choosing software.
What TurboTax Deluxe 2023 is—and who it may suit
TurboTax Deluxe 2023 is a Desktop edition for preparing a tax year 2023 return, not a current-year return. Intuit’s 2023 page identifies homeowners, people with charitable donations, and people with high medical expenses as potential users. These are prompts to check whether itemizing deductions and the relevant forms fit your situation—not a promise that you qualify for a deduction or that Deluxe will produce a better result.
Intuit says downloading, installing, and activating the product require an Intuit account and an internet connection. Its current Deluxe feature descriptions should not be treated as proof that every listed feature or form was included in the 2023 release. Before buying or using the software, verify that the 2023 edition supports your specific forms and tax circumstances.
Can you still file a 2023 return with TurboTax?
Yes, but not through TurboTax Online e-filing, according to Intuit’s support guidance updated April 13, 2026. Intuit says 2023 returns can be prepared with TurboTax Desktop and must be filed by mail. It also says some customers may be eligible to hand off a 2023 return to Full Service in connection with filing a 2025 return; that is an eligibility-dependent route, not an option available to everyone. Check Intuit’s current guidance before proceeding.

The original deadlines are long past: the IRS said April 15, 2024 was the deadline for most taxpayers to file and pay 2023 federal tax. Intuit’s historical 2023 online license terms described an e-file window through October 15, 2024. Neither date means an overdue return should be ignored; use the current filing route and seek qualified tax advice if you need help addressing your circumstances.
How to decide whether Deluxe is the right route
- You need software for tax year 2023. Confirm that you are working on a 2023 return, rather than a current-year return.
- Your return may involve itemized deductions. Homeownership, charitable donations, and high medical expenses are reasons to investigate whether itemizing is relevant. Confirm the applicable rules and whether the 2023 software supports the forms your return requires.
- You can use a Desktop product. Intuit identifies Desktop as its preparation route for prior-year 2023 returns. Check device compatibility and the product’s specific requirements before obtaining it.
- You can print and mail the return. Intuit’s guidance says TurboTax Desktop-prepared prior-year returns must be mailed; its current support instructions explain preparation and filing steps.
- You have checked current availability and cost. Intuit lists a 2023 product page, but that does not establish current stock, pricing, or availability from third-party sellers.
Prepare carefully before mailing
Gather the documents needed for a complete return before filing. In its April 8, 2024 Tax Tip 2024-29, the IRS advised taxpayers to wait until they receive all proper tax documents, warning that filing sooner could cause mistakes and delays. The IRS also recommends organizing records to prepare an accurate return.

What about IRS Free File or another option?
The IRS announced Free File as an option for eligible taxpayers during the 2023 filing season, particularly those comfortable preparing their own taxes. That historical announcement does not establish that the same offer is currently available for filing a 2023 return. Check present eligibility and filing options rather than assuming an old-season program can still be used.
If you are unsure which forms apply, whether the product covers your situation, or how to handle a late return, consider contacting a qualified tax professional. Intuit’s Full Service route may also be worth checking if you are filing a 2025 return and want to know whether you qualify to include a 2023 return.
