Why Delta Air Lines Retired Its Boeing 777s

Delta’s 777 retirement combined an urgent pandemic response with a longer-term plan to simplify and modernize its fleet.

Delta retired its 18 Boeing 777s because the COVID-19 travel collapse made reducing capacity and cash burn urgent—and the crisis also gave the airline a chance to speed up its longer-term fleet simplification and modernization. Delta planned to remove the aircraft from service by the end of 2020 and continue long-haul flying with Airbus A350-900s.

Why did Delta retire the 777s?

Delta’s decision had two connected reasons. In May 2020, as the pandemic sharply reduced air travel, the airline said it needed to operate at a smaller scale and preserve cash during the recovery. At the same time, it described retiring the 777s as a way to simplify and modernize its fleet. The pandemic accelerated that strategy; it was not merely a temporary pause in flying.

The scale of the shock is clear in Delta’s June-quarter results: the company reported that enplaned passengers were down 93% year over year. That figure is Delta’s report for the June 2020 quarter, not a measure of the decline for the entire year.

What did Delta plan to do with the aircraft?

Delta announced the retirement of all 18 of its Boeing 777s, with removal from service planned by the end of 2020. Its May 13, 2020 SEC filing recorded the authorized retirement plan; the airline announced it publicly the following day.

Delta said its Airbus A350-900s would continue serving long-haul flying. It also said the A350-900s burn 21% less fuel per seat than the 777s they would replace. That is Delta’s published comparison; it should not be read as an independently verified figure for every route or operating condition.

How the decision fits Delta’s fleet strategy

Delta later described the pandemic as an opportunity to simplify its fleet and accelerate retirement of the 18 777s along with other older, less-efficient aircraft. Its 2024 report lists the 777-200ER and 777-200LR among retired models, confirming that the retirement was completed rather than left as a temporary grounding plan.

What the explanation does—and does not—show

The record supports a combined explanation: the demand crisis made capacity and cash preservation immediate priorities, while retiring a relatively small aircraft fleet advanced Delta’s simplification and modernization plans. It does not establish that fuel efficiency alone caused the decision. Nor does Delta’s announcement provide a complete route-by-route map showing which aircraft replaced each 777 on each route.
