British Airways announced in August 2024 that it would pause direct flights from London Heathrow to Beijing from 26 October 2024. BA did not give a route-specific reason in that announcement. Contemporary reporting pointed to the difficult economics of flying around Russian airspace: longer journeys, extra fuel use and more complex crew planning for Western airlines, while Chinese carriers could fly more directly. Those factors are reported context, not a confirmed explanation from BA.

What BA announced—and when

On 8 August 2024, BA said it would pause its Heathrow–Beijing service from 26 October 2024. The reported suspension period ran until at least November 2025, with the schedule still under review. That announcement described a pause, not a permanent closure. The sources available here do not establish whether the route has resumed by 8 October 2026, so check BA’s current timetable before making travel plans.

BA told The Guardian: “We will be pausing our route to Beijing from 26 October, and we’re contacting any affected customers with rebooking options or to offer them a full refund.” The paper reported that BA would contact affected passengers with those options.

Why the route was paused

BA’s announcement, as reported by The Guardian, did not state why the route was being paused. The Guardian described broader operating pressures on Western airlines serving China: avoiding Russian airspace meant considerably longer flights, more fuel consumption and more complicated crew deployment. Chinese carriers could fly directly across Russia, giving them a competitive advantage on those routes. This is contemporaneous reporting about the operating environment, not a confirmed account of BA’s internal decision or proof of the specific factors behind this route decision. The same report noted that foreign tourism to China had not returned to pre-pandemic levels and that Virgin Atlantic had also decided to stop its Shanghai service on similar grounds. BA had previously closed its Heathrow–Chengdu service in 2016. These are relevant signs of the broader challenges airlines faced, but they do not establish the profitability or passenger demand of BA’s Beijing route.

The route’s history and Beijing airport

BA restarted passenger flights from London to Beijing in June 2023, after a pandemic-related suspension. The service operated four times a week to Beijing Daxing. BA’s announcement at the time called it “one of our most important routes.” BA’s June 2023 route restart announcement.

The Beijing airport was Daxing, not Beijing Capital. BA moved its operation to Daxing in October 2019, when it said the route would continue daily. That airport move was separate from the later suspension. In its 2023 restart announcement, BA identified China Southern as its joint business partner and said both airlines operated from Daxing, supporting connections and onward travel. That partnership does not mean China Southern took over BA’s Heathrow–Beijing service. BA’s announcement about moving its Beijing operation to Daxing.

What affected passengers could do

For passengers affected by the 2024 pause, BA said it would offer rebooking options or a full refund. The announcement does not specify the terms for every ticket or itinerary, so customers should check the options BA provides for their booking.

If comparing alternative itineraries, check the complete journey rather than just the headline flight time:

  • Journey time: Include connection time and account for the possibility that a connecting itinerary takes longer than a nonstop flight.
  • Airport: Confirm which Beijing airport the itinerary uses and whether a connection requires changing airports.
  • Fare conditions: Compare change and refund rules before buying, especially if plans may change.
  • Routing: Confirm whether each option is nonstop or involves a connection.

These are practical comparison points, not a ranking of specific flights. The sources cited here do not establish current schedules, fares or carrier availability.
