Ontario International Airport (ONT) matters to cargo shippers because it combines major parcel-carrier sorting operations with an Inland Empire location, overnight operating flexibility, and nearby distribution infrastructure. The airport reported 835,129 tons of freight, including U.S. mail, in 2025. That figure shows the scale of its cargo activity; it is not a parcel count or a current national ranking.
What makes ONT a cargo hub
A cargo hub is more than a place where freight aircraft land. Parcel networks depend on the connection between aircraft schedules, sorting facilities, and onward transport. ONT brings those elements together: major carriers operate there, the airport sits within the Inland Empire logistics region, and its operating characteristics support overnight activity.
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) describes ONT as a major UPS cargo hub. Its 2024 aviation technical report cites the airport’s geographic position, long runways, and limited noise restrictions that permit 24/7 operations as factors behind that role. Carriers and sorting operations connect flights to deliveries
SCAG lists UPS, FedEx, Amazon Air, Ameriflight, and Kalitta Air among ONT’s cargo carriers. ONT’s 2022 economic impact report says UPS, Amazon, and FedEx operate large sorting facilities at the airport. Aircraft bring freight into the network; sorting facilities help route it onward. Its location links air cargo to a wider logistics region
ONT is in the Inland Empire, a major distribution area east of Los Angeles. The airport’s planned HUB logistics complex illustrates how air operations fit into that wider network. ONT says the site is near two rail lines and the I-10, I-60, and I-15, and is less than 45 miles from the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complexes. That proximity creates options for connecting freight with roads, rail, warehouses, or ports; it does not mean every shipment uses those modes.
The HUB warehouse project
The airport leased 215 acres for The HUB, which is planned to include nine warehouses totaling 4.3 million square feet. ONT’s project page reports four buildings complete and says the remaining buildings were expected by mid-2026. How much freight does ONT handle?
ONT’s annual statistics report freight tonnage, including U.S. mail. The measure is weight, not the number of packages, flights, or the airport’s economic impact. The airport’s published series shows substantial cargo activity across recent years, but also variation from year to year.

These figures are from ONT’s official annual statistics, which label the measure “Freight” and note that it includes U.S. mail. The 2020 total was a pandemic-era high in this series; it should not be treated as the airport’s normal annual level. International cargo: what the airport materials establish
An August 2024 airport authority board packet describes a planned Container Freight Station intended to handle international cargo clearance under U.S. Customs and Border Protection requirements. The materials discuss support for cargo from both passenger and cargo operations. ONT’s importance is best understood through its combination of carrier operations, sorting facilities, operating conditions, regional location, and logistics development—not a single league-table position. The airport’s current annual statistics establish its freight totals but do not give a current national rank. ONT’s 2022 economic impact report says the FAA ranked it among the top 10 U.S. airports for air cargo in 2021; that is a historical ranking claim reported in a 2022 airport report, not a current position.
