Re:

Why Are Some Pokémon Cards Going Down in Value in 2026?

Some Pokémon singles are falling in 2026 because of reprints, restocks, generous pull rates, fading competitive demand, and corrections after hype. Here is what the data shows and how to check a specific card.

Not all Pokémon cards are falling. The declines seen in selected singles in 2026 have several different causes: more copies entering circulation after products are opened or restocked, shifting collector interest, weaker play demand as a card nears rotation, generous pull rates in new sets, and corrections after a sudden spike or buyout. Which cause applies depends on the exact card, variant, condition, language, and time window. A drop in one card says little about the market as a whole.

What the 2026 price reports measured

The most specific recent evidence comes from two TCGplayer market reports. The first, dated May 13, 2026, looked at Near Mint copies of cards with at least ten sales between April 12 and May 11, 2026. The second, dated August 18, 2026, looked at Near Mint copies with at least ten sales between July 18 and August 16, 2026. Both are marketplace samples of selected cards. They are not a census of every Pokémon card or every sale, and they describe those cards in those weeks, not current prices.

Source What it measures Time window Scope to keep in mind
TCGplayer report, May 13, 2026 Near Mint singles with at least 10 sales April 12 to May 11, 2026 Selected cards on one marketplace; not all sales
TCGplayer report, August 18, 2026 Near Mint singles with at least 10 sales July 18 to August 16, 2026 Selected cards on one marketplace; latest card-level sample, not a live October quote
TCGCharts Research market report, mid-summer 2026 Sum of PSA population times price across 87,252 tracked cards, computed daily First half of 2026 comparison Publisher-defined tracked universe, including graded and liquid raw cards

Why individual cards are dropping

The two TCGplayer reports name several mechanisms. They overlap, and a single card often reflects more than one of them.

More copies in circulation after openings and restocks

In the May report, Perfect Order singles fell as more product was opened in the first months after release, and Prize Pack cards declined as more copies entered circulation. In the August report, restocks of Shrouded Fable products put downward pressure on cards in that set, and reprints of Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Boxes added pressure across that set. The logic is simple: when more copies of a card exist, each copy is worth less unless demand rises to match.

Generous pull rates in new sets

The August report attributes a decline in the new set Pitch Black to the relatively generous pull rate of its Ultra Rare cards. An Ultra Rare Poké Pad, meanwhile, faced an influx of supply in the May report even though it kept selling. Pull rate determines how many copies of a rare card exist, so a generous rate can weaken prices early in a set’s life.

Competitive demand fading near rotation

Rotation removes older sets from Standard format play. The August report says some playable Shrouded Fable cards faced less demand as rotation approached. A card that players need for competitive decks can lose value when that need is about to end, even if its artwork or collector appeal is unchanged.

Corrections after buyouts and spikes

Prices can rise sharply on short-term hype, then fall once that demand disappears. The August report links a Rayquaza VMAX retreat from its mid-July high to an earlier buyout and reduced sales. The May report also describes minor corrections after historic gains. A chart that peaks sharply is often less a sign of long-term value than of how thin the buying was at the top.

Shifting collector preferences

The May report describes collector preference differences, meaning some Pokémon and some card types attract more demand than others at a given moment. Two cards from the same set can move in opposite directions for this reason alone.

Why this does not mean the whole market is falling

TCGCharts Research, in its mid-summer 2026 report, estimates the value of its tracked cards at $10.1 billion, up from $6.0 billion six months earlier. That estimate sums PSA population times price across 87,252 tracked cards and is computed daily. The same report says 86% of liquid raw cards and 92% of PSA 10 copies ended the first half of 2026 higher. These figures come from that publisher’s defined universe. They do not cover every card, and they do not cancel out declines in particular singles.

The two sources can both be accurate because they measure different things. TCGplayer tracks Near Mint marketplace singles over a few weeks. TCGCharts weights graded and tracked cards by population and price. An aggregate can also move because of which cards sold in a given month, even when no individual card changed price. TCGCharts’ seasonality analysis avoids this by matching the same card and grade across consecutive months, which is the method to copy when you check a specific card.

What Pokémon and secondary analysts say about reprints

Pokémon Support published an update dated May 26, 2026, acknowledging that high demand affected product availability. The company said it is printing more impacted products at maximum capacity and will continue reprinting products to replenish participating retailers. Its statement reads: “For new Pokémon TCG expansions launching in the future, we are maximizing production to increase product availability upon release, and we will continue to reprint impacted products to replenish stock at participating retailers, including Pokémon Center, as soon as possible.” The update does not publish set-by-set print counts, and it does not say that any specific card’s price fell because of a particular reprint.

TCGinvest, a secondary analyst, reports that reprints and restocks coincided with lower sealed-product prices in several historical cases, with recoveries later once extra stock sold through. It also notes that Pokémon does not publish print-run dates, and that circulating unit-count rumors about Destined Rivals were unconfirmed. Treat that analysis as an interpretation of price history, not as production data or a forecast.

How to check whether a specific card is really falling

  1. Identify the exact card: set, card number, art or variant (such as a special illustration versus a standard print), and language.
  2. Match the condition: raw Near Mint against raw Near Mint, or the same grading company and grade. Do not compare a high-grade auction result with a raw listing.
  3. Use completed sales rather than asking prices, and check how many sales sit behind the figure. The TCGplayer reports used a minimum of 10 sales.
  4. Compare the same card and grade across consecutive, complete months, and note the start and end dates of the window.
  5. Look for supply events: product openings, restock or reprint announcements, and new-set pull rates.
  6. Look for demand events: approaching rotation, a recent buyout or social-media spike, and changes in competitive play.

Condition drives much of the price gap between copies. Sleeves and careful storage help a card stay in its grade, but they do not on their own prevent a price decline or raise market value.

Limits of what can be concluded

  • The latest card-level sample ends August 16, 2026. Prices and stock status change quickly, so treat those figures as a dated snapshot.
  • TCGplayer’s samples cover selected Near Mint cards on one platform. They do not show what every card did, and they do not cover other platforms or regions.
  • Pokémon’s May 26, 2026 statement describes intent to increase production and reprint, not confirmed print quantities or card-level price effects.
  • No official card-by-card price index was located, so market-wide claims depend on third-party datasets with different scopes.

The Bottom Line

Single cards fall for specific reasons: more copies after openings and restocks, generous pull rates, fading competitive demand, and corrections after hype. Those reasons do not add up to a collapse in the whole hobby, since the broader datasets available for 2026 show many tracked cards rising in the first half. For personal finance, a single card’s dip is not evidence of a trend. Treat any card’s price as a condition-specific, time-specific figure, and do not count a card’s recent movement as a return. The sources here do not support a buying or selling recommendation.
