Allen estate in the first stage of a sale reported at about $4.1 billion. The NBA approved the transaction on March 30, 2026, and the first-stage closing was reported the next day. The estate’s remaining 19.9% was reported as a deferred stake, not a permanent retained share.
Who owns the Trail Blazers now?
The buyer is a group led by Tom Dundon, operating through the buying vehicle Rip City Rising. Other reported members include investor Sheel Tyle, Marc Zahr, the Cherng Family Trust and Stanley Middleman. The group bought the team from the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen.
The NBA Board of Governors approved the sale on March 30, 2026. Reports said the group’s first-stage purchase of 80.1% closed on March 31. The precise division of ownership among the buyer group’s members was not stated in the cited closing reports.
How much did the Blazers sale cost?
Coverage placed the deal at about $4.1 billion, though reports use different figures because they describe different measures of the transaction. Sportico reported a $4.25 billion headline price for the signed deal in 2025; its 2026 approval story cited $4.1 billion. ESPN reported $4 billion. Closing reports described the 80.1% stake at a $4 billion valuation and the remaining 19.9% at a $4.5 billion valuation. These figures are not directly interchangeable: a headline deal price and valuations assigned to separate stakes can differ.

What happens to the estate’s remaining stake?
Closing reports said the buyer group acquired 80.1% initially, leaving 19.9% to be transferred later. The Portland Tribune reported that the remaining stake was due to close no later than September 1, 2028, but that timing was reported with low confidence. As of October 8, 2026, available coverage did not establish whether that later transfer had occurred. The 2025 report that the estate would keep 20% and Dundon would be majority governor described proposed terms before closing and conflicts with the later reports of an 80.1% initial purchase followed by a deferred transfer.
How the sale unfolded
- May 2025: The Allen estate announced it had begun a process to sell the team, according to NBA.com.
- September 2025: The estate announced a formal sales agreement with Dundon’s group. The terms were not disclosed at the time.
- November 2025: A report described proposed terms under which the estate would retain 20% and Dundon would serve as majority governor, despite holding a slightly smaller percentage. Later closing reports described a different structure.
- March 30, 2026: The NBA Board of Governors approved the sale.
- March 31, 2026: Reports said the first stage closed, transferring 80.1% to the buyer group.
What changed for the franchise?
The sale ended the Allen family’s ownership of the Blazers, which reporting described as the first time since 1988 the team had not been owned by Paul Allen or his sister Jody, the estate’s executor. Bert Kolde, who had been chairman under Allen, was reported to be observing board meetings without a governance role. That detail was reported with low confidence.
