What the campaign was
American Eagle ran a denim campaign in July 2025 featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. Its headline line was “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” Some campaign material also played on the word “genes,” a pun on the idea of inherited traits. The pun is the literal core of the controversy: everything that followed, including the White House response, grew out of how that wordplay was read.
The wordplay
Reporting from July and August 2025 describes the “jeans/genes” construction as the point that drew criticism. Supporters read it as an ordinary clothing advertisement built on a familiar joke. Critics read the juxtaposition of a conventionally attractive white actress with a word about inherited traits as carrying a racial or eugenic meaning.
Two readings of one ad

What the White House said
White House communications manager Steven Cheung responded to the liberal criticism of the ad. He called the backlash “moronic” and said it was “a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024.” Those words are Cheung’s political characterization of the critics. They are not a formal White House finding about the advertisement, and they do not describe how all voters think about the ad.

Sweeney’s and American Eagle’s explanations
Sweeney said the campaign was an innocent celebration and that turning it into a political statement was not her intention. She described that turn as an “absurd political statement.” American Eagle said the campaign “is and always was about the jeans.” Both are the actor’s and the company’s own accounts of what they meant. The available reporting does not independently verify intent in either direction.
