American AAdvantage, Frontier Miles, and Spirit Free Spirit have activity-based expiration rules. Allegiant Allways Rewards is not included because a current official expiration rule was not verified.
Programs whose miles or points do not routinely expire
| Program | Verified expiration rule | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Delta SkyMiles | Miles do not expire under the program’s routine mileage-expiration policy. | Delta reserves the right to close or deactivate accounts in specified circumstances, including fraud, member-requested closure, death, and program-rule violations. Delta SkyMiles Program Rules |
| United MileagePlus | United’s MileagePlus overview says miles have no expiration date. | The cited official page is Japan-language and marked current as of April 2026; consult United’s applicable member terms if you need a U.S.-specific rule. United MileagePlus overview |
| JetBlue TrueBlue | Points never expire, according to JetBlue’s earning and award-travel page. | JetBlue: Earning Points & Award Travel |
| Southwest Rapid Rewards | Points do not expire under the published terms. | Southwest Rapid Rewards Terms & Conditions |
| Atmos Rewards | Alaska Airlines’ program announcement says points do not expire. | Atmos is the current program name for Alaska Mileage Plan. Alaska announced a one-to-one conversion for Mileage Plan miles and HawaiianMiles balances to Atmos points; check your account for your transition status. Alaska Airlines: Introducing Atmos Rewards |
“Do not expire” means there is no routine clock that removes an inactive balance under the cited rule. It does not mean the airline can never close an account or forfeit its balance under other program terms.
Programs where inactivity can put miles or points at risk
| Program | Inactivity rule | What can protect the balance |
|---|---|---|
| American AAdvantage | Without qualifying activity during a 24-month period, miles expire, subject to stated exceptions. | American lists a co-branded card held by the primary member as an exception. The account shows the earliest date miles could expire, and qualifying activity moves that date to 24 months after the latest qualifying activity. Terms and conditions; AAdvantage FAQ |
| Frontier Miles | Miles expire at the end of the 12-month period after the last accrual activity date. | Active Frontier Airlines World Mastercard members in good standing are excepted. Frontier Miles Terms & Conditions |
| Spirit Free Spirit | Points expire 12 months after the last accrual or redemption activity. | At least one accrual or redemption in each 12-month period prevents expiration. Points of Free Spirit credit card holders do not expire while the card account remains open. Free Spirit Terms and Conditions |
| Allegiant Allways Rewards | Not established here from a current official source. | Check Allegiant’s current program terms before relying on a particular expiration rule. |
What counts as activity depends on the program
Do not assume that any transaction resets every airline’s expiration clock. American’s terms describe qualifying activity that includes eligible earning or redemption and certain miles transactions. Spirit’s rule counts accrual or redemption. Frontier’s cited clause is keyed to accrual activity. Check the current terms and, where available, the date shown in your account rather than relying on a generic “earn once” rule.
How to protect a balance that can expire
- Check the account first. Look for the expiration date or activity history in the loyalty-program account. American says the account displays the earliest date its miles could expire.
- Confirm the qualifying actions. Read the program’s terms to verify which earning, redemption, or other transactions count and when they must post. A card exception applies only under that program’s stated conditions.
- Complete qualifying activity before the deadline. Allow time for a transaction to post; do not assume a pending purchase or booking has already reset the clock.
- Recheck the balance and date. Confirm the activity posted and that the account reflects the expected change.
Why a no-expiration rule is not the whole story
Airlines set their own loyalty-program conditions and can change them. Award-seat availability and redemption terms also affect whether a balance is useful. The U.S. Department of Transportation advises consumers to review each airline’s rules and customer service plan; its frequent flyer program guidance discusses program changes and award availability.

When comparing programs, consider not just whether miles expire, but also the inactivity window, which actions reset it, any card-related exception, account-closure provisions, and whether a program has changed names or transitioned balances.
