The latest USDA Crop Progress report shows different leaders depending on the crop and measure. For the week ending October 4, 2026, Tennessee and Texas had the fastest corn harvest among states in the report’s selected-state table; Louisiana and Mississippi tied for the soybean harvest lead; and Washington led winter wheat planting for the 2027 crop. Corn and soybean harvest, and winter wheat planting, were each behind their respective five-year averages. There is no single overall state winner.

Which states are ahead in corn harvest?

In USDA’s selected-state corn table, Tennessee was 83% harvested and Texas was 82% for the week ending October 4, 2026. Iowa was the laggard at 7%. Across the 18 states in the table, corn harvest was 23%, compared with a 2021–2025 average of 27%.

The table covers states accounting for 93% of 2025 U.S. corn acreage; it is not a ranking of every state. These percentages describe the share of the crop harvested, not crop quality or yield. USDA NASS’s October 5 Crop Progress report lists the state figures and comparison averages.

Which states led and lagged in soybean harvest?

Louisiana and Mississippi tied for the highest reported soybean harvest, at 87% each. Iowa was lowest at 5%. The 18-state total was 25%, below the 2021–2025 average of 33%.

Those 18 states account for 96% of 2025 soybean acreage. The selected-state total is an aggregate, not a complete state-by-state census of the entire country.

Where is winter wheat planting furthest along?

Washington led winter wheat planting for the 2027 crop, at 83%, compared with its five-year average of 74%. Ohio was lowest among the selected states at 2%. Across the 18-state table, planting was 36%, versus a 2021–2025 average of 46%; emergence was 16%, versus an average of 20%.

The report’s additional crop tables show why a state cannot be labeled a universal winner or loser:

  • Cotton harvest: Arizona was 41% harvested against a 31% five-year average; Texas was 35% against 30%. Oklahoma was at 0%, below its 4% average.
  • Sorghum harvest: Oklahoma was 51% against a 29% average, while Texas was 81% against 89%. Across six reporting states, harvest was 32%, compared with a 38% average.
  • Rice harvest: Missouri was 93% harvested against a 70% average. Across six states, harvest was 86%, compared with a 79% average.

Each comparison is specific to one crop and stage. A state leading one harvest table may be behind average in another.

Does “winning” mean having the best crop conditions?

No. Harvest and planting progress measure how much acreage has reached a specified stage; condition ratings describe the share of a crop rated very poor, poor, fair, good, or excellent. They are separate measures, and neither is a direct yield estimate.

How to interpret the report’s comparisons

  • Check the crop and stage. Harvest percentages cannot be compared as if they were condition ratings or planting progress.
  • Keep the reporting date attached. These figures are for the week ending October 4, 2026, and the report was released October 5.
  • Distinguish the benchmark. The 2021–2025 average is not the same as last year’s progress. Some year-ago figures in the October 4 tables are marked “NA,” so they do not support a year-over-year comparison.
  • Notice the coverage. State tables include selected major reporting states and disclose the share of acreage covered; the rankings are not necessarily all-state rankings.
  • Say ahead of or behind pace, not better or worse. Progress against an average does not establish final yield or economic outcome.

USDA NASS says progress estimates measure the percentage of a crop at or beyond a specified stage, while condition estimates distribute the crop among five rating categories. State observers provide the reports, and estimates may be revised the following week. The agency describes producers, agribusinesses, and traders as users of these statistics. See the NASS Crop Progress and Conditions Survey methodology and its Crop Progress and Condition graphics for definitions and presentation guidance.
