Many grocery stores stayed open on July 4, 2026, but hours varied widely by chain, by market, and sometimes by individual branch. Some chains kept regular hours, some closed early, and Costco was reported closed in every market covered. July 4, 2026 has already passed, so the times below are a record of that holiday and an example of how to check your own store, not a schedule to plan around now.
Reported July 4, 2026 hours by market
Local news coverage published July 2 and 3, 2026 gave the following examples. Each list applies only to the market named, and none of it establishes hours for any other city or for a future year.
Jacksonville area
- Publix and Winn-Dixie: regular store hours.
- ALDI: closed early at 4 p.m.
- Trader Joe’s: closed at 5 p.m.
- The Fresh Market: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Whole Foods Market: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Kansas City area
- ALDI: limited hours. The coverage did not state exact times.
- Costco: closed.
- Hy-Vee: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in this coverage. See the branch exception below.
- Sun Fresh (Westport location): reported to remain open 24 hours.
Indianapolis area
- ALDI: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- The Fresh Market: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Whole Foods Market: normal hours.
- Costco: closed.
- BJ’s Wholesale Club: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Why the same chain can differ by branch
Area-wide coverage can be right for most stores and still be wrong for one. The clearest case is Hy-Vee. Kansas City-area reporting listed Hy-Vee stores as open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but Hy-Vee’s official page for its Independence #2 store in Independence, Missouri, lists July 4 as closed. A branch’s own page is more specific than a regional roundup, so it should win when the two disagree.
Kroger’s official holiday-hours listing for July 4 carries the line “We’re Open July 4th.” The detailed branch hours could not be confirmed from that listing, so do not treat the headline as a time you can plan around. Check the individual store.

Pharmacy and pickup can run on different hours
Store hours and service hours are not the same thing. H-E-B’s official holiday-hours listing gives its stores as “Open regular hours” under Independence Day, but it lists pharmacy service from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its curbside and home delivery are listed at regular hours. A shopper who needs a prescription, a bakery order, or a curbside pickup slot should check that department directly rather than assuming the store’s open time covers it.
How to confirm your store’s July 4 hours
- Open the chain’s website and use its store locator to select the exact branch you plan to visit.
- Look for a holiday hours notice on that branch’s page. Compare it with the regular hours, and note any early close.
- Check each department you need separately: pharmacy, deli, bakery, fuel, curbside pickup, and delivery often have their own schedules.
- Call the store’s main number when a closure is possible or when a specific service matters. A phone call settles conflicts between a regional article and a branch page.
- If the branch page and local news disagree, trust the branch page and confirm by phone.
What carries over to other years
The specific times above will not repeat. The pattern is more useful. Warehouse clubs and some specialty grocers closed or shortened hours in 2026 coverage, while large full-line supermarkets more often kept their regular schedule. Branch-level differences appeared in the same market, so a regional rule rarely holds for every store. Verify each year’s announcements in the days before the holiday.
