If you want a managed private sale that also handles payment and loan payoff, compare Autotrader’s Private Seller Exchange (PSX). No platform has been shown to produce the highest net proceeds for every car. The better choice depends on what your car is and whether it will be accepted, what each site costs you as the seller and the buyer, how much control you want over price and reserve, and how much transaction work you are willing to handle.
Compare the three main options at a glance
The table below uses the platforms’ own published terms, checked on 8 October 2026. Fees and features change, so confirm them on each site before you list.
| Platform | Best fit | Seller cost | Buyer cost | Price control | Transaction support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bring a Trailer | Distinctive collector and enthusiast vehicles; submissions are reviewed and can be declined | Seller page lists a $99 Classic package and a $429 Plus package (the Plus package includes professional photos and video); accepted sellers pay a disclosed listing fee | 5% of purchase price, $250 minimum, $7,500 cap | Auction; reserve and no-reserve rules must be checked on the current policies | Verified Checkout for eligible listings covers title transfer, payment, and shipping online |
| Cars & Bids | Enthusiast and specialty cars sold by auction | Listing is free; seller receives 100% of the final sale price | 5%, $250 minimum, $7,500 maximum | Auction; review current reserve terms and the consequences of a no-reserve sale | SafePay, powered by KeySavvy, for secure payment and title transfer |
| Autotrader Private Seller Exchange (PSX) | Managed private sale of eligible cars (see eligibility below) | Ad fee of $9 (asking price under $10,000), $29 ($10,000 to $20,000), or $49 (above $20,000); closing fee of 1% of final sale price with a $99 minimum, waived for a sale completed through Direct Offer | Not stated on the page reviewed | Private-party listing at an asking price you set; not an auction | Can pay off an active loan; guarantees payment once the buyer pays through PSX and takes possession; shipping, financing, and protection plans for long-distance deals |
Bring a Trailer: strongest audience for distinctive cars
Bring a Trailer (BaT) reviews every vehicle submission and may accept or decline it, so do not assume your car will be listed. Its policies say the seller and winning bidder are responsible for negotiating and formalizing the sale itself, and that most auctions run for seven days. That seven-day window does not include the time needed to submit, prepare the car, and close the sale.
BaT’s seller page displays four platform-published figures: more than 800,000 registered bidders, more than 190,000 sales to date, 95% seller satisfaction, and an 81% sell-through rate. These figures are undated on the page, so do not attribute a year to them. They are BaT’s own marketing claims, not independently verified data, and they do not forecast what your individual car will sell for or whether it will sell at all.

BaT’s seller page describes submission this way: “Submitting your vehicle is free — you only pay a listing fee if your car is accepted.” The page does not name a speaker or give a publication date for that line.
Cars & Bids: a free listing with a buyer-paid fee
Cars & Bids says listing is free and that sellers keep 100% of the final sale price. The 5% fee falls on the buyer, with a $250 minimum and a $7,500 maximum. That buyer fee does not reduce your proceeds directly, but it can lower the price bidders are willing to pay, because they must add it to their cost. Its FAQ describes SafePay, powered by KeySavvy, as the online service for securely processing payment and title transfer. As with BaT, the auction rules on reserves matter as much as the fee schedule.

Autotrader Private Seller Exchange: a managed private sale
PSX is the option to compare when you want a private-party sale with more transaction help than a classified ad offers. Autotrader says it can facilitate paying off an active loan on your car, and it guarantees payment once the buyer pays through PSX and takes possession of the vehicle. It also offers shipping, financing, and protection plans for long-distance transactions. Those protections apply only under the stated payment and possession conditions, so read them before you agree to a deal.
Eligibility is narrow. PSX excludes branded, rebuilt, and salvage-title vehicles, leased vehicles, and vehicles built before 1989. The car must be in your possession, titled in your name, running, safe, and available for showings and test drives. If your car predates 1989, Autotrader’s FAQ points you to Autotrader Classics instead.

Estimate your net before you pick a platform
Platform fees are simple arithmetic once you have a realistic sale price. The examples below are hypothetical and use only the published fee schedules. They do not represent results for any real car.
- Hypothetical $60,000 sale on PSX: the ad fee is $49 (asking price above $20,000) and the closing fee is 1% of $60,000, or $600. The total seller cost is $649. A Direct Offer sale would waive the $600 closing fee.
- Hypothetical $8,000 sale on PSX: the ad fee is $9. A 1% closing fee would be $80, but the $99 minimum applies, so the closing fee is $99. The total seller cost is $108.
- Hypothetical $60,000 sale on Cars & Bids: the listing is free, so you keep the full $60,000 hammer price. The buyer pays $3,000 (5%) on top of the bid, which is the number bidders weigh against their own budget.
- Hypothetical $200,000 sale on Cars & Bids: the buyer fee would be 5%, or $10,000, but the $7,500 cap limits it to $7,500.
- BaT: your seller-side cost depends on the listing package and any disclosed listing fee, and the buyer pays 5% subject to the same $250 minimum and $7,500 cap. Compare the package price against what the car is likely to bring, because the package cost is fixed regardless of the sale price.
The fee schedules show what each site charges. They do not show which site will sell your car for more. Compare written offers or completed sales for the same make, model, year, mileage, condition, and specification before choosing.

How to choose
- Audience fit and acceptance: If your car is a distinctive collector or enthusiast vehicle, start with BaT or Cars & Bids. If it is a common car, the auction audience may not bid aggressively, and a managed private sale may suit it better. BaT can decline your submission.
- Price control: A PSX listing lets you set an asking price. An auction gives the market control, and a reserve sets a floor. A no-reserve auction means you accept the highest bid regardless of amount, so check the current rules before choosing that route.
- Effort and timing: Auctions require photos, written descriptions, and answers to buyers’ questions during the listing window. A managed service reduces administrative work but charges for it.
- Transaction support: Confirm how payment is handled, whether an outstanding loan can be paid off through the platform, how title is transferred, and who arranges transport.
- Eligibility: Confirm title status, model year, operability, possession, and geographic coverage before you spend time on an application.
Prepare a listing that holds up under buyer questions
A complete, truthful listing reduces questions and the risk of a deal falling apart late in the process. Include the exact year, make, model, and trim; mileage; options; ownership and title status; known defects; modifications; and service history. Photograph all sides of the car, the interior, and any relevant details. BaT specifically asks sellers for vehicle details, service history, photos, and images of both sides of the title. BaT also says local partners can help with detailing, photography, and storage if you want outside help with preparation.
From sale agreement to funds and keys
- Check the title and any loan first. Confirm the title is in your name and find out the loan payoff amount. On PSX, Autotrader can facilitate the payoff; on an auction, you handle it yourself.
- Set your price or reserve. Decide the asking price on PSX, or the reserve on an auction, and confirm the no-reserve rules if you are considering that route.
- Verify the buyer and the payment route. Use the platform’s payment process rather than accepting outside payments, and confirm when funds are released.
- Complete the title transfer under your state’s rules. Title-transfer and lien-release procedures vary by state, so confirm the steps with your state motor vehicle agency before you hand over the car.
- Settle transport before you accept a long-distance deal. Decide who pays for shipping, whether the platform supports shipping for that specific sale, and when the vehicle and title will be released.
Choose the platform after you have checked your car’s eligibility, estimated your net from written offers or completed sales for comparable cars, and confirmed the current fee schedule on the platform’s own pages.
