On the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch day, June 5, 2025, the main US retailers that announced in-store sales were Target, Best Buy, and GameStop, with Walmart also named in Associated Press launch-day reporting. Retailer announcements showed where the console was meant to be sold, not that every local store had units on the shelf. That date has passed, so this guide covers what happened in 2025, not current stock, hours, or prices.
Which US retailers announced in-store sales
Four retailers appear in the launch coverage. Their announcements differ in how specific they were, so it helps to read each one separately.

Target
Target’s corporate announcement, published in May 2025, said the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle would be sold in Target stores on June 5, before reaching the Target app and Target.com on June 6. The announcement added that this was “all while supplies last.” It also described launch-day events at select stores. Target is the clearest case of a retailer separating in-store timing from online timing, which matters if you were planning to go to a store rather than wait for an online order.
Best Buy
Best Buy said nearly all of its stores would open at midnight on June 5, 2025. The same announcement limited walk-in inventory: a restricted number of consoles, games, and accessories were available for in-store purchase. Opening details varied by location, so the store locator was the place to confirm a specific branch’s schedule.

GameStop
GameStop’s product page confirmed the console’s June 5, 2025 release and directed shoppers to local stores. The page shows that GameStop offered an in-store route. It does not establish how many units any branch received or when a branch opened.
Walmart
Associated Press reporting from launch day listed Walmart with Target and Best Buy as a major retailer selling the console in stores. This is general press coverage rather than a store-by-store commitment, so it should be treated as a lead to verify with a local branch.
Retailer comparison
The table compares the four retailers on the points the sources address. Where a source did not address a point, the cell says so.

Why a national announcement did not guarantee a shelf
Each of these announcements was a national statement, and none of them listed inventory for a particular store. Target’s “while supplies last” wording and Best Buy’s limited walk-in stock both signaled that quantities were finite. A shopper who arrived at a store on June 5 could find the console, find it sold out, or find that the store was not carrying it at all. The sources do not show how many units any single store received.
What Nintendo reported about early sales
Nintendo’s investor material says the Switch 2 launched globally on June 5, 2025, and that more than 3.5 million units sold through worldwide in the four days after launch, per Nintendo, 2025. This is a worldwide figure. It does not describe US launch-day sales, the number of units any retailer received, or how many were available to walk-in shoppers, and it should not be read as evidence of scarcity or abundance at a particular store.

If you are looking at this guide now
Because the launch was in 2025, a store visit today will not reflect launch-day conditions. To check current availability for a specific store, use that retailer’s store locator and call the branch, since the sources cited here do not establish current stock, hours, or pricing at any location. For the console itself, search for “Nintendo Switch 2 console” on the retailer’s site and confirm the listing and price directly.
For the June 5, 2025 launch, the most direct in-person option named in the sources was Target, which stated in-store sales on launch day with online sales the following day, and Best Buy, which stated midnight openings and limited walk-in inventory. GameStop and Walmart were named as in-store routes, but the sources did not specify timing or stock at any branch.
Walmart was named in the AP coverage. A few stores may have had the console on launch day, while others did not, and the reporting cannot show which was which.
Retailer announcements do not show which local stores had units. Checking a specific branch was the only way to confirm.
The April 2026 retailer pages could not be verified, so the figures here come only from the 2025 statements.
