Where to Buy Game Keys Online: How to Choose a Safe Seller

Buy game keys from the game publisher’s own store or a retailer the publisher approves for that specific game. Before paying, confirm the seller, activation platform, region, edition, delivery method and refund terms. A familiar retailer name alone does not verify every listing it carries.

Where can you buy game keys?

Start with the game’s publisher. Use its official store or check its official guidance for approved digital distributors. Approval is title- or publisher-specific: a retailer listed by one publisher is not automatically approved to sell every publisher’s games.

For Ubisoft games, Ubisoft’s approved digital distributors list names options including Amazon stores in several countries, Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle, Gamesplanet, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and Ubisoft Store, as well as region-specific retailers. The list can change, so check it directly rather than treating it as a universal whitelist.

Ubisoft warns that a retailer without a digital distribution agreement may provide a key that is invalid or illegally obtained and could later be revoked. It recommends buying from a digital retailer in your country or region, since purchases elsewhere may be region-locked or may not support your language.

What to check before you pay

• Seller identity: Check who is actually selling the key, especially on a marketplace where the retailer may host listings from other sellers. The retailer’s name does not, by itself, establish that a particular listing is authorized.
• Activation platform: Make sure the key is for the store or launcher you use. Steam says the packaging or delivery email should identify whether a retail or digital key is intended for Steam; an incompatible key can return an invalid product code error. See Steam’s Retail CD Keys guidance.
• Region and language: Confirm the key can be activated in your country and supports the language you need. A lower price in another region may not be usable where you live.
• Game and edition: Match the exact title and edition, including any expansions or bonus content you expect. Similar product names can refer to different editions.
• Delivery and support: Check whether the key is delivered immediately or later, and find the seller’s support and refund rules before checkout.
• Total cost: Compare the amount due at checkout, including taxes and fees, rather than relying only on the advertised discount.

How to buy a key with less risk

1. Identify the game’s publisher and open its official store or approved-distributor guidance.
2. Choose a retailer listed for that publisher and selling the exact game in your country or region.
3. On the product page, verify the seller name, activation platform, region, language, edition and delivery method.
4. Read the retailer’s refund and support terms, then compare the final checkout total.
5. Save the receipt and key-delivery message. If activation fails, follow the retailer’s support process; Steam directs buyers to the retailer for help with keys purchased elsewhere.

What happens if a key is revoked or does not work?

Steam says publishers can revoke CD keys, including when they determine a key was obtained fraudulently. For a key bought from a third-party website, Steam advises contacting the seller to request a refund; see Steam’s Revoked CD Keys guidance. Keep your order details and any messages from the retailer in case you need to make a support request.

Steam’s refund policy applies to purchases made through Steam, not purchases from outside sellers such as third-party CD-key retailers. Steam’s general rule allows a refund request within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours, though it says requests outside those conditions may also be submitted for review. Check the current policy and applicable local terms on Steam’s refund page; a Steam refund does not replace the retailer’s policy for an externally purchased key.

Should you buy or trade keys through Steam?

Do not treat Steam’s trading interface as a safe way to buy CD keys. Steam says CD-key trading is unsupported there, and keys offered in trades may be fake, already used, for a different game or region-restricted. Buy through an authorized retailer instead.
