The U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Nintendo Switch 2 system is now $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. That is a $50 increase from the $449.99 price Nintendo announced at launch, or about 11.1%. Nintendo’s May 7, 2026 notice cites “various changes in market conditions” and does not name tariffs. The price rise came after a period of tariff uncertainty, but Nintendo has not, in that notice, said tariffs caused it.
The current U.S. price
Nintendo of America announced on May 7, 2026 that the Switch 2 system MSRP in the United States would change. The notice reads: “Beginning on September 1, 2026, Nintendo of America will revise the MSRP of the Nintendo Switch 2 system in the U.S. from $449.99 to $499.99.” The notice applies to the system alone, not to bundles or accessories.

The percentage is our arithmetic from Nintendo’s two published system prices: $50 divided by $449.99 is approximately 11.1%. Nintendo did not publish that figure itself.
How the price got here
The Switch 2 has had three distinct U.S. price points in the past eighteen months, and they are easy to confuse because one of them is a bundle. The table separates them by date and by what each price covers.

| Date | What Nintendo did | U.S. price cited |
|---|---|---|
| April 2, 2025 | Announced the Switch 2 at launch | $449.99 system; $499.99 bundle with Mario Kart World |
| April 2025 | Delayed U.S. retail preorders to assess potential tariff impacts and evolving market conditions | Not stated in the delay notice |
| April 18, 2025 | Said system and bundle prices would remain as announced, while accessories would receive price adjustments | $449.99 system; $499.99 bundle |
| May 7, 2026 | Announced the U.S. system MSRP would rise | $449.99 to $499.99 |
| September 1, 2026 | Revised system MSRP takes effect | $499.99 system |
The $499.99 figure appears twice in this sequence, but only the September 2026 number is the current system price. The 2025 bundle at $499.99 included the game, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with the system alone.
Did tariffs cause the increase?
The honest answer is that the record shows sequence, not confirmed causation. Tariffs were a live concern when Nintendo launched the console, and the 2026 increase came later. Nintendo’s own explanation for the 2026 change, however, is broader.
What Nintendo said in 2026
The May 7, 2026 notice attributes the change “in response to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.” It does not list tariffs, trade policy, or any specific cost driver. A reader should not treat tariffs as the company’s stated reason unless a later Nintendo statement says so.

What Nintendo said in April 2025
Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, told WIRED in April 2025 that tariffs “weren’t factored into the pricing” of the console. He added, “It creates a challenge,” and, “It’s something we’re going to have to address.” He also said the company was “actively assessing” the situation and its impact. These remarks concerned the launch price announced at that time. They do not describe the 2026 revision.
What is not established
- Nintendo has not, in the sources reviewed for this article, directly tied the September 2026 system price increase to Trump administration tariffs.
- No public Nintendo figure shows how much of the $50 increase reflects tariffs, component costs, currency movements, or other market conditions.
- Bowser’s April 2025 comments cannot be extended to explain the 2026 decision.
Tariff rules that do not settle the console’s price
Readers often try to estimate the price from a published tariff rate. Two recent measures are frequently cited, and neither settles the question for a finished console.
The U.S.–Japan framework
The 2025 U.S.–Japan framework describes a baseline 15% tariff for nearly all Japanese imports, with qualifications and product-specific treatment. That statement does not establish the tariff treatment of a Switch 2 console. The final tariff classification, the country of origin, any applicable exceptions, and the supply chain all determine what duty applies.

The January 2026 semiconductor proclamation
A January 2026 proclamation sets duties on specified covered semiconductor products and excludes non-data-center consumer applications. It does not establish that a finished Switch 2 is covered by that duty. A component tariff rate cannot be applied to the console’s retail price without evidence that the component is covered and that the cost was passed through to buyers.

The system-only MSRP is the number to use when comparing the console’s price over time. If you are budgeting a full setup, you will also face accessory costs. The accessory prices below were announced on April 18, 2025. They are dated figures, not current quotes, and they are shown only to illustrate what Nintendo announced at the time.
| Accessory | Announced U.S. price (April 18, 2025) |
|---|---|
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | $84.99 |
| Carrying Case & Screen Protector | $39.99 |
| Samsung 256GB microSD Express Card | $59.99 |
How to estimate what you will actually pay
- Confirm the product. Make sure the listing is the Nintendo Switch 2 system alone. Check whether a game or other items are included before comparing prices.
- Compare against the $499.99 MSRP. MSRP is a manufacturer’s suggested price. It is not a guarantee of any retailer’s current price, and shelf prices can sit above or below it.
- Add only current accessory prices. Use the retailer’s live price for the controller, case, or storage card rather than the April 2025 figures above.
- Check the region. The September 2026 change covers the U.S. only. Nintendo said Latin American Switch 2 pricing would be announced later, so prices there may follow a different schedule.
For planning purposes, a U.S. buyer should budget around $499.99 for the system as of October 8, 2026, then add any accessories at current retail prices. Whether the price will move again depends on market conditions Nintendo has not itemized, and on any future notice from the company.
