Before he took control of Coventry City, Doug King was a commodity and agricultural businessman with a background in investment. Public reporting describes him as a trader of grains, non-grain feeds and petroleum, the chief executive of an oilseed processor, and the co-founder and majority owner of an investment firm. The reporting does not describe him as a professional footballer or as a figure in football management.
Education and early career
King studied mathematical engineering at Loughborough University, according to BBC Sport’s report on the club’s takeover approval. The Guardian adds that he grew up in Lowestoft, captained the university, and in 1986 worked as a caddy for the golfer Ronan Rafferty at the Dunhill Cup. These details are personal background; they say nothing about the business roles that followed.
Commodity trading
BBC reporting describes King’s early commercial work as trading in grains, non-grain feeds and petroleum. Those are the only product areas named in the public record reviewed for this article. The reporting does not give a dated, year-by-year employment history, so the sequence in which he moved between these areas, and the length of each role, cannot be reconstructed from published sources.
RCMA Capital LLP
King co-founded the investment firm RCMA Capital LLP and remained its majority owner. BBC Sport reported in 2022 that the firm had overseen investments of more than $400 million (£337 million). That figure describes money the firm managed or oversaw on behalf of its investments. It is not a measure of King’s personal wealth, and it does not indicate how much of that total he owned.

Yelo Enterprises and the move into rapeseed oil
Yelo Enterprises is an oilseed processing business based in Stratford-upon-Avon. BBC described King as its chief executive. In a 2023 report, BBC said Yelo had invested more than £70 million in the region. That investment figure is attributed to the company, not to King personally.
ITV News Central reported in 2023 that King entered the rapeseed oil business in 2016, and that this move brought him to the West Midlands. Rapeseed oil processing is the link between his trading background and the Yelo role. Yelo and RCMA Capital are separate businesses: one processed oilseeds, the other was an investment firm.

What King has said about his money
In a May 2026 Guardian interview, King said: “I’ve earned some money. I’ve decided to deploy it into a project, which is a dangerous thing to do, actually, for your wealth.” The comment is a useful personal-finance signal about how he views concentrated investment in a single project, although it does not state the size of his wealth or the amount committed to the club.

At a May 2023 press event, ITV News Central asked whether his backing for the club would remain the same regardless of the play-off result. King replied “Of course.” He then said: “There’s been very, very little money spent on infrastructure here and we’re kicking off with the pitches but the training site at Ryton needs to be totally transformed, the academy needs a proper look.” The exchange was reported by ITV News Central, 26 May 2023.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the public record does not show
- No personal net worth figure. The $400 million and £70 million numbers describe firm-level investment and regional investment, not what King owns.
- No full employment history. Public reporting gives the main roles without start and end dates for most of them.
- No purchase price. The cited sources report the 85% agreement and the EFL approval, but not the sum paid.
- Limited verification of company filings. Companies House states that it does not check the accuracy of the information companies file, so its records confirm appointments, not the business claims made about them.
Anyone relying on these facts for financial or governance purposes should treat the business descriptions as attributed reporting and check any specific claim against the original company or regulatory filings.
