Nintendo lists these as possible sources, but that does not mean any particular seller has stock or is endorsed. Before paying, check the console’s model, condition, included parts, and return terms; secondhand Wii hardware and accessories do not carry a Nintendo warranty.
Where to look for a used Wii
Nintendo’s guidance for older and used products points buyers to several kinds of sellers. Availability, prices, condition, and buyer protections vary by listing, so compare the actual item rather than assuming a marketplace or shop guarantees a complete, working console. Nintendo’s guidance on refurbished, older, and used products also recommends researching a seller’s reputation.
- Specialist online retailers: Some online retailers focus on older and used products. Look for clear details about testing, condition, included accessories, returns, and any seller-provided warranty.
- Online auction sites: These can surface discontinued hardware, but read the listing closely to distinguish a working console from a parts-or-repair unit or an incomplete bundle.
- Pawn shops and local used-goods shops: If possible, ask to test the console before buying. Confirm it powers on, displays video, reads a disc, and synchronizes with a Wii Remote.
- Garage sales, flea markets, and classified ads: These may allow an in-person inspection, but you may need to assess the condition and completeness yourself.
Nintendo’s store sells accessories, replacement parts, and a selection of authentic refurbished products to U.S. and Canadian residents, while noting that many parts and accessories for older systems are no longer available. Its guidance does not confirm that Wii consoles are currently offered there, so check directly rather than counting on official refurbished Wii stock.
Choose the right Wii model for your games
Not every Wii revision supports the same games and accessories. Nintendo’s model comparison identifies three versions: RVL-001, RVL-101, and Wii mini RVL-201. If GameCube compatibility matters to you, look specifically for an RVL-001 and ask for a photo of the model label. Nintendo’s Wii model comparison lists model details and common serial-number prefixes.

- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
| Model | What to know before buying |
|---|---|
| RVL-001 | Has GameCube controller and memory-card ports. This is the model to seek if you need to play GameCube discs or use GameCube accessories. |
| RVL-101 | Does not have GameCube ports and cannot play GameCube discs or use GameCube accessories. Some Wii games and accessories that require those ports are also unsupported or limited. |
| Wii mini RVL-201 | Does not support GameCube compatibility, online functionality, or SD cards. |
Nintendo lists common serial-number prefixes as LU or LB for RVL-001, KU or KB for RVL-101, and HW for Wii mini. Treat those as a clue, not a substitute for checking the model label in the listing photos.
Check the bundle and seller before you pay
A console advertised as “console only” may not include everything needed to play. Ask the seller to identify each component in the sale and, where possible, demonstrate basic operation.

- Match the model to your needs. Confirm the model number and check that it supports the games and accessories you plan to use.
- Check what is included. A typical setup may require the power adapter, video cable, sensor bar, and Wii Remote; some games also need a Nunchuk. Do not assume these come with the console.
- Ask what has been tested. Confirm power, video output, disc reading, and controller synchronization. If you can inspect it in person, test those functions yourself.
- Read the sale terms. Review the seller’s reputation, return policy, warranty language, and photos of the exact item. Nintendo says secondhand products do not carry a Nintendo hardware or accessory warranty.
- Compare the total cost. Add the cost of missing parts to the console price before comparing it with a complete tested bundle. Current prices were not established here.
- Clean before use. Nintendo recommends cleaning secondhand products before using them.
Know what a used Wii can—and cannot—do online
The Wii Shop Channel closed on January 30, 2019, and new content can no longer be purchased there. Nintendo’s support page said redownload and Wii-to-Wii U transfer functions remained available when it was written, but also said they would eventually end. Check Nintendo’s current service information before relying on those functions. Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel discontinuation notice explains the closure.

If your goal is playing Wii games rather than owning the original hardware, a Wii U may be an alternative: Nintendo says it can run nearly all Wii games in Wii Mode. Wii Remotes and other Wii accessories may work depending on the game, but the Wii U GamePad itself does not control Wii software. Check the specific game’s controller requirements and the seller’s terms before choosing a Wii U instead. Nintendo UK’s backwards-compatibility guidance describes Wii U support for Wii games.
