A graduate degree is a master’s or doctoral degree earned after a bachelor’s. That is the standard progression, but the labels describe the level of a program, not the age of the student, the format of the course, or the name of the institution.
Where each level sits
The table below places each credential on the U.S. ladder. Duration figures come from the specific sources named in each cell. They describe typical programs, not guaranteed completion times.

Undergraduate credentials
Associate degree
An associate degree is the shorter undergraduate credential. EducationUSA, the U.S. Department of State’s advising resource, describes it as a two-year degree. Some students earn it to enter a vocation directly. Others use it as a transfer path, completing general education credits and then moving into a bachelor’s program. Whether credits transfer depends on the receiving institution.
Bachelor’s degree
A bachelor’s degree is the undergraduate credential most people mean when they say “college degree.” EducationUSA describes it as a four-year degree. The completion time varies: some students take longer because of changed majors, part-time enrollment, or transfers, and some programs are designed to run four or five years.

Graduate credentials
Master’s degree
A master’s degree builds on a bachelor’s and adds specialization. EducationUSA says master’s programs generally require one to three additional years of study. NCES, in a 2022 publication, describes a typical master’s as one or two years of full-time study beyond the bachelor’s. The gap between those ranges reflects differences in program type and how each source defines the program, so check the specific program’s length.
Doctoral degree
A doctoral degree is the highest graduate credential. EducationUSA describes doctoral study as involving comprehensive examinations and original research that ends in a dissertation. NCES distinguishes three kinds of doctorate: research or scholarship doctorates, professional-practice doctorates, and other doctorates. The distinction matters because a professional-practice doctorate is not the same route as a research-focused one, even though both are graduate-level.

Professional degrees
Some professional programs, including medicine and law, have their own structures. They are often classified as graduate or professional for official purposes. Admission usually depends on prerequisite courses rather than one required major. The prerequisites are set by each program, and the sources here do not give a single standard list.
Why “graduate” can mean two things
“Graduate” is also used to describe a person who has completed a course of study. A graduate of a bachelor’s program is a college graduate; a student enrolled in a master’s program is a graduate student. The meaning depends on context, so when you read a sentence such as “graduate tuition is higher,” the word refers to the level of study.

Do you need an undergraduate degree before graduate school?
For the standard path, yes. Graduate programs generally follow a bachelor’s degree. Admission still depends on the program. Some professional programs accept applicants from many majors if they complete the required prerequisite courses. Integrated and professional programs can have different structures, so a program may combine stages or set entry rules that differ from the general pattern. Read the admissions page for the exact requirement rather than assuming a degree of a particular type is needed.
Why the definition matters for financial aid
Student-aid rules use their own technical definitions. Federal Student Aid’s 2023–2024 handbook, for example, defines graduate or professional student status for aid purposes using criteria such as study above the baccalaureate level or enrollment in a professional program, along with completed-study requirements. A student who is a graduate in everyday language may not match that definition in every case, and rules for later award years can change. Use the current handbook for the year you are applying in, and confirm eligibility with the school’s financial aid office.

How to check the level of a specific program
- Find the exact credential name on the program’s page, such as “Master of Science” or “Doctor of Philosophy,” rather than relying on the school’s general description.
- Confirm the entry requirement, usually a completed bachelor’s degree, and any prerequisite courses listed in the admissions section.
- Check the program’s catalog or official length statement for the number of credits and expected time to completion.
- For financial aid, licensing, or transfer decisions, use the current official rules for that program and the year you are enrolling, since general definitions cannot settle those specifics.
These definitions describe the U.S. system. Other countries organize degrees and the terms used for them differently, so the labels above should not be applied directly to foreign programs.
