Wednesday later entered administration and was sold to Arise Capital Partners in May 2026. Textor did not become the club’s owner.
Did John Textor buy Sheffield Wednesday?
No. BBC Sport reported on 3 September 2025 that Textor was interested in the club, quoting him as saying: “It’s true that I am looking for a traditional English club to buy, or with which I can partner.” The report described the takeover situation as being in limbo, not as an agreed transaction. BBC Sport’s report establishes reported interest, but not a completed purchase or accepted offer.
The reviewed reporting does not establish whether Textor submitted a formal bid, how much he might have offered, or exactly when he stopped pursuing the opportunity. Interest, discussions or correspondence should not be treated as proof of a formal offer.
What happened to the takeover process?
Wednesday entered administration
On 24 October 2025, the EFL said it had received notice that Dejphon Chansiri had taken steps to appoint administrators to Sheffield Wednesday and the company that owns Hillsborough. The EFL said administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction under its regulations and could create an opportunity to move toward a sale. The EFL’s administration statement describes that stage of the process.

A preferred bidder withdrew
In February 2026, a consortium led by James Bord withdrew from the process. BBC Sport reported that the administrators said the withdrawal did not mean the sale process was starting over and that other parties remained interested. BBC Sport’s report on the withdrawal concerns a different bidder; it does not establish that Textor had been selected or made a formal offer.
Arise Capital Partners completed the purchase
On 11 March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Arise Capital Partners, led by David and Michael Storch and Tom Costin, had been selected as preferred bidder. A preferred-bidder selection is a stage in a sale, not proof that it has completed. The EFL announced on 2 May that the administrators had formally concluded an agreement with Arise and that Wednesday met the relevant requirements to leave administration. The EFL’s 2 May statement set out the league’s position; the joint administrators confirmed completion on 5 May 2026. BTG’s completion announcement confirms the sale.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the acquisition in May 2026, according to the joint administrators. The EFL said Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration after meeting relevant League requirements. The documented outcome is therefore an Arise purchase, not a Textor takeover.

The EFL describes a takeover as an “acquisition of control.” Its guidance says potential acquisitions are subject to EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements. The review includes matters such as criminal convictions, regulatory sanctions, financial difficulties, bankruptcy history, qualifications, experience and training; a prospective owner must also demonstrate the ultimate source and sufficiency of funding. The EFL calls this an “eligibility test, not a suitability test.” The League’s owners and directors guidance explains the framework.

For Wednesday, the EFL said the club would remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons and could sign players under a business plan agreed with the League. It also exercised discretion not to impose a further 15-point deduction when the club exited administration. These are conditions attached to Wednesday’s continuing EFL membership, not evidence about what Textor offered or intended to pay.
