QPR’s Eberechi Eze Sell-On Clause: What the 15% Profit Share Means for the Arsenal Move

QPR's reported sell-on clause gives it 15% of Crystal Palace's profit on Eberechi Eze, not 15% of the fee. The Guardian estimated around £6m from the Arsenal move.

QPR’s reported sell-on clause gives the club 15% of the profit Crystal Palace makes when it sells Eberechi Eze, not 15% of the transfer fee. Guardian reporting in August 2025 estimated that the Arsenal move would bring QPR around £6m. Crystal Palace announced Eze’s departure to Arsenal on 23 August 2025, so the deal is complete. The “Arsenal look to seal” wording in the headline describes the stage before that announcement.

What a sell-on clause does

A sell-on clause is a term in a transfer agreement that gives the selling club a share of money from a later sale. When a club buys a player and later sells him on, the original club is paid a percentage of the onward fee or of the profit. It lets the club that sold the player keep some stake in the player’s future value. The clause is usually paid only when the later sale happens, so the amount depends on the price of that later deal.

The reported terms for Eze

The basis: profit, not the fee

The Guardian’s 30 July 2025 report said QPR were believed to be due 15% of any profit Palace made on Eze. Its 21 August 2025 retrospective said Palace had inserted a 15% sell-on clause on any profit. The wording matters. QPR does not receive 15% of the Arsenal fee. In the usual sense, profit on a player sale is the fee received minus what the buying club paid for the player. In Eze’s case, that is the fee Palace received from Arsenal minus the £19.5m Palace paid QPR in August 2020, as reported by the Guardian and BBC Sport. Neither outlet published the clause’s exact definition of profit.

The percentage

The reported share is 15%. This comes from Guardian reporting in 2025. The contract itself has not been published in the coverage reviewed, and no official QPR statement confirming the terms appears in the 2025 reporting.

The estimated payout

The Guardian estimated that QPR would receive around £6m from the move to Arsenal. This is the newspaper’s estimate, not a confirmed payment. The reporting does not say when any money would be paid.

Why the fee figure changes the answer

Because the clause is based on profit, its value depends on which fee figure is used as the sale price. The 2025 reports give three different totals, so the same 15% formula produces different results. The examples below are illustrations of the arithmetic, not calculations of what QPR is owed.

  • BBC Sport’s completed-deal figure of £60m including £8m in add-ons: using the full £60m, profit is £40.5m and 15% is about £6.1m. That is close to the Guardian’s estimate.
  • The same figure without the add-ons: the base falls to £52m, profit to £32.5m, and 15% to about £4.9m.
  • The Guardian’s pre-completion figure of up to £67.5m including bonuses: profit would be £48m and 15% about £7.2m. This was a pre-completion valuation and release-clause figure, not the final price.

The reports do not say whether add-ons or bonuses count toward profit, or whether any other costs are deducted before the 15% is applied. For that reason, the £6m estimate is best read as a plausible midpoint of a range, not a verified sum.

Why the reported fee figures differ

The three fee totals come from different points in the transfer process and use different breakdowns. The table lists each figure with its outlet, date and what it describes.

Transfer status

Crystal Palace’s official announcement on 23 August 2025 confirmed Eze’s departure to Arsenal. The Premier League’s report the same day confirmed the signing and the No. 10 shirt, and reproduced a statement from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta: “He is a powerful and exciting player who will give us a new dimension in our attacking game.” Any description of Arsenal still trying to complete the move is out of date. The sell-on clause relates to this completed sale.

What is and is not established

  • Established in 2025 reporting: QPR’s reported 15% share of Palace’s profit, Palace’s £19.5m fee to QPR in 2020, and Palace’s sale of Eze to Arsenal announced on 23 August 2025.
  • Estimated, not confirmed: the around £6m payout to QPR.
  • Not established: the contract wording, the exact definition of profit, which fee figure applies, when payment is due, and whether QPR has confirmed the amount received.

All the figures here come from August 2025 reporting. Sell-on terms can be disputed or varied, so check for newer reporting before relying on any number.
