What Is Seasonal Marketing? How to Plan a Timely Campaign

Seasonal marketing is the planning of products, promotions, content, or experiences around a time of year or a predictable audience moment. It can mean a holiday bundle or seasonal product, but it can also be a useful guide, event, or advertising campaign—discounting is optional. A campaign is worth doing when the moment matters to the people you want to reach, fits your business, and supports a goal you can measure.

What counts as seasonal marketing?

The timing may follow a season, holiday, cultural observance, retail event, or another recurring moment. The right opportunity depends on audience, geography, product relevance, brand purpose, and campaign objective; a date that matters in one region or community may not matter in another. Calendars and observances can also shift from year to year.

Seasonal marketing does not have to be a sale. Options include a limited-edition product, a bundle, a gift guide, an event, a seasonal landing page, or informative content. For example, Shopify describes Yoloha Yoga publishing an Earth Week sustainability guide and hosting Earth Day yoga classes—an experience and content approach rather than simply a price promotion. Shopify’s seasonal marketing guide also gives examples such as seasonal bakery products, back-to-school promotions, and holiday bundles. These are possibilities, not a checklist every business should follow.

  • Audience and geography: Which customers care about the moment, and where are they? Do not assume a holiday or observance is universal.
  • Fit: Does the event connect naturally to what you sell, provide, or stand for?
  • Goal: Can this campaign plausibly support a specific outcome, such as sales, leads, awareness, visits, engagement, or retention?
  • Preparation cost: Is there enough time and capacity to create the offer, content, approvals, and channel assets?
  • Operational readiness: Can you meet demand, fulfill orders, provide the service, and keep the landing page or event working?

A smaller industry-specific or niche moment can be a better fit than a major holiday. If the connection feels forced or the team cannot deliver the promised offer, choose another opportunity.

How to plan a seasonal marketing campaign

1. Choose the moment and audience

State which audience you want to reach, where they are, and why this moment is relevant to them. Check the date and local context for the places you serve. A campaign calendar can help capture important dates, but it should support audience decisions rather than dictate them.

2. Set one primary objective and a way to measure it

Decide what success means before choosing creative or channels. Use a metric that matches the objective: conversions or sales for a sales campaign, leads for lead generation, and sessions or engagement for awareness. HubSpot’s campaign documentation recommends specific, measurable metrics and supports reviewing campaign assets collectively or individually. HubSpot’s guidance on understanding campaigns explains campaign goals, metrics, assets, and calendar-based planning.

3. Choose an offer or editorial hook

Build the campaign around a reason for the audience to pay attention. That might be a seasonal product, holiday bundle, promotion, collaboration, gift guide, event, landing page, or informative article. Choose a format that fits the brand and objective; the calendar date alone is not a strategy.

4. Work backward from launch

Set decision and approval dates, then schedule creative production, landing-page work, channel assets, inventory or service readiness, launch, and close. There is no universal lead time: the work involved determines how early to start. Google Ads advises preparing a seasonal campaign ahead of its flight, while Shopify describes one retailer planning for Valentine’s Day in October as an example—not a rule for every business.

For a paid digital campaign, prepare conversion tracking and tagged links in advance. Google Ads recommends adapting keywords, ad text, and landing pages to the event, and notes that a separate seasonal campaign may be useful when it needs its own budget or may be reused later. Make sure the budget and billing are ready for the campaign window. See Google Ads guidance on creating a seasonal campaign.

5. Coordinate channels and operations

Use the channels that suit the audience and goal: email, SMS, social posts, paid ads, a dedicated landing page, a bundle, or an event. Keep the message recognizable across them, but tailor each asset to its format. Shopify’s interviewed marketer cautions against sending duplicated email and SMS messages on the same day. Confirm owners, approvals, stock or service capacity, and working links before launch.

6. Monitor results and record what to reuse

During the campaign, confirm that assets are live and tracking correctly, then make changes based on performance. After it ends, record the result against the original objective, note which audiences and assets responded, and capture useful creative or landing-page changes for the next cycle. Reviewing both the overall campaign and individual assets can help distinguish a strong idea from a strong execution.

When Google Ads seasonality adjustments may apply

Google says Smart Bidding already manages seasonal events, so a seasonality adjustment is not a routine requirement for every seasonal campaign. It is an advanced option for an expected major conversion-rate change. Google describes it as ideal for short events lasting 1–7 days and says it may work less well for periods longer than 14 days. Availability depends on campaign type and bidding strategy; Travel campaigns are not supported. Check Google Ads’ current seasonality adjustment guidance for eligible campaign and bidding types before using the feature.

Examples of matching a moment to a campaign

  • Product-led: A bakery could offer seasonal products; a retailer could create a holiday bundle.
  • Content- or experience-led: Shopify’s example of Yoloha Yoga’s Earth Week sustainability guide and Earth Day classes links the seasonal moment to the brand’s subject matter.
  • Event-led assortment planning: Shopify quotes Adam Davis, Magnolia Bakery’s senior marketing manager, saying: “We identified Halloween as a tent pole where we could grow and innovate the product assortment.” This is one marketer’s description of a product-planning choice, not proof that Halloween is right for every business.
