Lloyd’s of London is a specialist insurance and reinsurance marketplace, not one insurance company. Customers bring risks to the market, brokers and other intermediaries help place them, and syndicates made up of capital providers assess and underwrite the cover. The Corporation of Lloyd’s oversees and supports the market; it does not itself insure customers.

How Lloyd’s of London works

A customer seeking insurance can access the Lloyd’s market through a broker, coverholder or service company. Brokers help transfer risks from clients to underwriters. Underwriters assess risks and decide whether to accept them, and on what terms. The resulting policy is written by a syndicate operating in the market—not by the Corporation of Lloyd’s.

Lloyd’s describes the Corporation as an independent organisation that protects and maintains the market’s reputation and provides services to it. This distinction matters: seeing “Lloyd’s” associated with a policy does not mean the Corporation is the customer’s insurer. Lloyd’s overview of its structure explains the market’s role and participants.

Who does what at Lloyd’s?

Participant Role
Members Provide capital and accept insurance risks through syndicates.
Syndicates Underwriting groups that write insurance business in the Lloyd’s market.
Underwriters Assess and price risks, then decide which to accept and on what terms.
Managing agents Manage one or more syndicates and oversee their underwriting operations.
Brokers Help clients place risks with underwriters in the market.
Coverholders and service companies Provide routes for business to reach the market; customers may approach Lloyd’s through these intermediaries as well as brokers.
Corporation of Lloyd’s Oversees and supports the market and provides shared infrastructure; it is not the insurer on a customer’s policy.

These roles are distinct: a managing agent runs syndicates, a syndicate underwrites risks, and members supply the capital behind them. Lloyd’s provides further detail in its explanation of market participants.

How large is the Lloyd’s market?

For the year ended 31 December 2025, Lloyd’s reported £57.9 billion in gross written premium, £10.6 billion in profit before tax, an 87.6% combined ratio and £49.8 billion in total capital. These are market-level results, not a quote, guarantee or forecast for an individual policyholder. Lloyd’s announced its 2025 full-year results on 19 March 2026.

In its latest annual-report snapshot, Lloyd’s listed 103 syndicates and 3,015 approved coverholders. It also reported 401 registered brokers, 409 service companies and 57 managing agents at 31 December 2025. Separately, its key-facts snapshot describes a market with more than 180 lines of business, more than 50 distinct insurers, and reach across more than 200 countries and territories. These are Lloyd’s reported figures and descriptions, not guarantees of availability in every location or for every risk.

Where Lloyd’s began

Lloyd’s traces its origins to Edward Lloyd’s coffee house in late seventeenth-century London. In the 1680s, a coffee house near the Thames where people exchanged maritime intelligence became associated with the trade and shipping risks that helped shape the insurance market. The institution’s history is described in Lloyd’s official history.

How Lloyd’s differs from a single insurance company

A conventional insurer is one company that sells and underwrites policies through its own corporate structure. Lloyd’s is a marketplace in which syndicates underwrite risks, with members providing capital and managing agents running syndicates. Customers commonly reach those underwriters through brokers or other market intermediaries. The Corporation’s job is to oversee and support the marketplace, rather than to act as the insurer itself.
