He founded Bulkhaul Limited in 1981 and was elected a Labour councillor for Park End in 1979, aged 21.
What was Steve Gibson doing before joining Boro?
Building Bulkhaul
Gibson founded Bulkhaul Limited in 1981. Middlesbrough Council describes the company as transporting bulk liquids, powders and gases; BBC Sport also identifies bulk transport as the business through which he made his money. Middlesbrough Council’s biography and BBC Sport corroborate the business connection.
Serving as a councillor
In 1979, at age 21, Gibson was elected a Labour councillor representing Park End. Middlesbrough Council identifies him as the town’s youngest Labour councillor at the time. That public-service role preceded his involvement in the club.
His early connection to football
Born in Middlesbrough on 9 January 1958, Gibson grew up locally, attended St Pius X Primary and St Mary’s College, and played football for his school and a local team. In a 2004 interview, when asked whether he watched Boro as a child, he said he played for his school on Saturdays and a local team on Sundays. The interview provides that context.
#1 Best Overall
- Soft warm acrylic knit in classic Boro team colors of red + white | Substantial weight that drapes + holds its shape
- Boro team name + mock club crest jacquard knitted into both sides, so the scarf reads right whichever way it hangs
- This scarf measures over 5 feet long with soft fringes at either end | Wraps once around the neck with room to spare, or hang it on the wall as a classic Boro collectible
- Hand wash is recommended and ready for cold weather | One size fits adult Men + Women, and it packs down small for the Stadium or a watch party
- Authentic fan scarf, as worn by Boro supporters at the Riverside Stadium and everywhere | A great gift idea for the Boro fan or the Boro believer in your life!
When did Gibson join Middlesbrough’s board?
Middlesbrough Council says Gibson joined the board at age 26 and was its youngest-ever director. The exact year is not consistent across accounts: the council gives his age, while BBC Sport dates his first directorship to 1986. Because those details do not establish one definitive appointment year, the supported point is that his board role followed the 1979 council election and the founding of Bulkhaul in 1981.
His involvement in the consortium that helped save the club from liquidation in 1986 belongs to the next stage of his Boro story, after he had joined the board; it was not what he did before joining.
