Jesse Lingard’s Manchester United wage was reported at about £100,000 a week when he signed a new four-year contract in April 2017. Sky Sports attributed that figure to its own understanding, not to a club disclosure. A 2020 report by Sporting News, carrying Goal’s reporting, put the total value of the deal at roughly £21 million over four years, before performance-related bonuses. Neither number is an officially published contract figure, and neither shows what he was actually paid in total.
Where the Manchester United figures come from
Two media reports supply the numbers most often quoted for Lingard’s time at Old Trafford. They measure different things, and they come from different levels of sourcing.
| Source | Published | Figure reported | Unit | Basis | Bonuses included |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sky Sports | 6 April 2017 | About £100,000 | Per week | Sky Sports News HQ’s understanding. Manchester United confirmed the contract but did not disclose the wage in the report. | Not stated |
| Sporting News, carrying Goal reporting | 25 May 2020 | Roughly £21 million | Total over the four-year contract | Media estimate built on the weekly figure | Excluded. Performance-dependent bonuses would come on top. |
The Sky Sports report also described the deal as four years with a one-year option. The £21 million estimate covers the four-year term. The reporting reviewed here does not say whether the option was taken up, so no total that includes it can be confirmed from these sources.
Checking the £21 million estimate against the weekly wage
The two figures are consistent with each other. A flat £100,000 a week over 52 weeks is £5.2 million a year, and four years at that rate comes to £20.8 million. That is close to the £21 million estimate, which suggests the 2020 report used the same weekly basis and did not add bonuses.

This is our arithmetic, not a figure any report published. The reports do not show a year-by-year breakdown, any change in wage across the contract, or actual payments made. Treat the total as a contract-value estimate.
What the 2026 reports say about Ipswich, Coventry City and Middlesbrough
The “snub” framing in the headline comes from a March 2026 report by ChosunBiz, a translated article based on OSEN reporting. After Lingard left FC Seoul, it said he made counteroffers to more than seven clubs. It named Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Middlesbrough among the clubs that turned him down.

The report does not give the terms Lingard offered, the wage involved, or any reason a club gave. None of the reports cited here includes an on-record explanation from Ipswich Town, Coventry City or Middlesbrough. Any account of a specific wage dispute with those clubs would go beyond the evidence.
The chronology is useful context. BBC Sport reported on 27 February 2026 that Lingard was a free agent after his FC Seoul spell and that talks with Corinthians were progressing. The March 2026 report says he then signed with the Brazilian club, on a contract running through the end of 2026, with a conditional option to extend through 2027.

The Corinthians salary report and why it is hard to compare
The same March 2026 report relays a Corinthians salary of €100,000 per month, attributed to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola. It is a secondary report of a figure from a named reporter, not a disclosure by the club.
The Corinthians figure differs from the Manchester United figures in unit, currency and sourcing. Annualised, €100,000 a month is €1.2 million a year. Converting that to pounds would require an exchange rate and a date, and the reports do not supply either. Do not place it next to the £100,000 weekly figure as if they were the same kind of number.

- Unit: weekly, monthly, annual or total contract value. Convert before comparing.
- Currency and date: a euro figure from 2026 and a pound figure from 2017 cannot be compared without an exchange rate for a stated date.
- Basic pay or total value: a weekly wage is not the same as a contract’s total value, and neither automatically includes bonuses or image rights.
- Official or reported: ask whether the club confirmed the figure or whether it came from a media estimate or a named reporter.
- Currency of the report: the most recent reporting used here is from March 2026. Later changes to Lingard’s contract or career are outside this article.
