The term is not one universal payment scheme: the details, fees, and delivery time depend on the country, currency, and service. In Europe, a SEPA credit transfer is a specific way to send euros; Sweden’s Bankgiro is a separate payment system.
What a bank giro transfer means
The European Central Bank defines a credit transfer as “A payment transaction from the payer’s account to the payee’s account, initiated by the payer.” In everyday use, “bank giro transfer” commonly describes this kind of payer-initiated account-to-account payment. But “giro” can also appear in the names of national payment systems, so it does not identify one globally standardized product or process.
A SEPA credit transfer is one specific example: it sends euros within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), which uses common payment schemes and standards. SEPA also covers direct debits and card payments. The ECB reported 41 participating countries as of 22 May 2025; check current official information for the latest scope rather than relying on a fixed country list. How a giro transfer differs from a direct debit
The key difference is who initiates the payment. With a credit transfer, the payer sends the instruction. With a direct debit, the payee collects payment after the payer has authorized it through a mandate. A transfer can suit a one-off invoice you choose when to pay; a direct debit is commonly used for authorized recurring collections. The exact protections and cancellation rules depend on the applicable scheme and local law.

What details you need to make one
For a SEPA credit transfer, use the recipient details supplied on an invoice or other official payment instructions. The core account identifier is usually the recipient’s IBAN. Whether a BIC is also required depends on the destination: the Bundesbank says IBAN alone applies within the EEA, while some other SEPA destinations require a BIC. Do not assume the same fields apply to every giro payment worldwide. Deutsche Bundesbank: Questions and answers on SEPA.
- Open your bank’s or payment provider’s supported payment channel, such as online banking, its mobile app, or a paper form.
- Enter the recipient’s account information and the amount, currency, and any requested payment reference. Required fields and reference formats vary by provider and payment type.
- Check the recipient details and amount against the official invoice or instructions before authorizing the payment.
- Review the displayed execution date, fee, and payment type—especially whether the transfer is ordinary or instant—then submit it.
How long a transfer takes
Timing depends on the scheme and provider. For conventional SEPA transfers, the Bundesbank says arrival can take up to one banking business day. For SEPA instant credit transfers, the ECB describes funds as available within ten seconds of the order; the Bundesbank says these payments are available around the clock, every day of the year. These are SEPA scheme timings, not a guarantee for every bank transfer: confirm that both the sending and receiving providers support the relevant instant service and check any cutoff or execution details shown before you pay.

What it may cost
There is no single fee for a bank giro transfer. Under the applicable EU rules, a cross-border euro payment must be charged at the same rate as an equivalent domestic payment; that does not require either payment to be free. Your provider may charge a fee, and a payment involving currency conversion may have separate conversion costs. Check your provider’s terms for the specific currency, destination, and transfer type. What a Bankgiro number means in Sweden
In Sweden, Bankgiro refers to a specific payment infrastructure, not simply the general idea of a giro transfer. Bankgirot describes its system as an open system for payments among companies, organizations, and private individuals, processing Swedish kronor (SEK). Each bank or payment institution sets its own customer pricing for the Bankgiro services it offers. Follow the recipient’s instructions and your provider’s requirements when making a Swedish Bankgiro payment. Bankgirot: The Bankgiro System.

Choosing the right payment option
Before sending money, check that the payment type matches the recipient’s instructions and your needs. A SEPA credit transfer applies to euro payments within SEPA; another country or currency may use a different domestic or international service. If speed matters, check whether an instant option is available for both sides. Compare any provider fee and currency-conversion cost, and verify which recipient details the destination requires.
