A credit card is a payment card connected to a credit account: the card issuer lends you money for permitted transactions, then bills you to repay it under the account terms. It is not money already in your checking account. Your monthly statement shows what happened during the billing period, what you owe, the minimum payment, and when payment is due. Paying the full balance by the due date can avoid interest on purchases when your account has an applicable grace period; paying only the minimum usually leaves an interest-bearing balance.

What a credit card is—and what it is not

A credit card gives you access to a line of credit from the card issuer. When you use it for a permitted transaction, the issuer records a charge on your account. You are responsible for repaying the amount under the cardholder agreement, which sets the credit limit, interest rates, fees, payment timing, and other conditions. The physical or digital card is the means of accessing the account; it is not the credit itself. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s overview of credit cards explains this basic arrangement.

Unlike a debit card, a credit card does not directly draw the purchase amount from money in your checking account. Instead, you borrow from the issuer and repay later. A credit card is therefore not “free money”: charges become a debt, and interest or fees may apply according to the account terms.

What a monthly credit card statement tells you

A billing period is the set interval covered by a statement. The statement reports account activity for that period and the amount owed at its close. Look for these details:

Check the statement and your cardholder agreement for the rates and rules that apply to your account; issuers and account terms differ. The CFPB’s explanation of how card interest is calculated describes why a statement may show different rates for different kinds of balances.

What APR means and how interest is calculated

APR, or annual percentage rate, expresses an interest rate on an annualized basis. It does not mean that interest is charged just once a year. Issuers commonly calculate interest daily, often using an average daily balance method. The method and applicable rates depend on the account terms.

A card can have different APRs for purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances. To understand the cost of carrying a particular balance, check the corresponding APR and the calculation method in your statement or cardholder agreement. There is no single APR or fee that applies to every credit card.

Why paying the full balance differs from paying the minimum

Paying the statement balance in full

If your card provides a purchase grace period and you are not already carrying a balance, paying the full statement balance by the due date generally avoids interest on new purchases. The grace period is conditional: issuers are not required to offer one, and the agreement specifies which balances qualify. If you carry a balance, you may lose the grace period, and interest may apply to unpaid amounts and future purchases under your terms.

Paying only the minimum

The minimum payment is the amount required to keep that billing period’s payment current, not a plan to repay the balance quickly. Paying only the minimum leaves the rest of the debt unpaid; interest generally continues to accrue, and repayment can take years. Paying more than the minimum reduces the balance faster and generally lowers the interest paid. The Federal Trade Commission advises: “If you can’t pay your full balance, make at least the minimum payment.” FTC guidance on using credit cards explains payment responsibilities and disputes.

How a grace period works

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines it this way: “A grace period is the period between the end of a billing cycle and the date your payment is due.” Whether a card offers one, which transactions qualify, and how it can be restored are governed by the cardholder agreement. Do not assume that every transaction is interest-free until the due date.

For U.S. consumers, the CFPB says card companies must establish procedures to ensure bills are mailed or delivered at least 21 days before payment is due. This timing guidance is U.S.-specific, not a universal rule for every country. See the CFPB’s answer to “What is a grace period for a credit card?”

Why cash advances work differently

A cash advance—such as taking cash from an ATM using a credit card—is not the same as a purchase. It generally begins accruing interest on the transaction date rather than receiving a purchase grace period, and its APR may be different. Check your account terms before taking one. The CFPB’s interest calculation guidance discusses how rates may vary by balance type.

What to check in your own card terms

If you are learning how a card works or comparing offers, review the terms that affect the way you expect to use it:

  • Purchase, balance-transfer, and cash-advance APRs.
  • Annual fees and transaction fees.
  • Whether a purchase grace period applies, and the conditions for keeping or restoring it.
  • Payment due date, minimum-payment rules, and how payments are applied.
  • Penalty terms and any rewards conditions relevant to your spending.

Rates, fees, and eligibility vary by issuer and account and can change. The cardholder agreement and current statement are the relevant sources for your account.
