Polygon is a blockchain ecosystem, not just one network. Its best-known network is Polygon PoS; its native gas and staking token there is POL, which replaced MATIC through a 1:1 upgrade. Polygon also describes Agglayer and Polygon CDK as parts of a broader effort to connect and build configurable chains.
What does “Polygon” mean?
The name can refer to different things, so it helps to distinguish the network people commonly use from the wider project. Polygon PoS is a blockchain network. Agglayer is an interoperability and aggregation layer intended to connect participating chains. Polygon CDK is a toolkit builders can use to create configurable chains. These components have different purposes; Polygon PoS is not another name for all of them.
Polygon Labs’ 2024 overview framed Polygon more broadly as an aggregated network of chains. It described Agglayer as a way to coordinate interoperability and shared liquidity. That overview said only initial Agglayer components were live at the time; that is a historical statement, not a current status report.
What happened to MATIC?
MATIC was upgraded to POL at a 1:1 ratio. Polygon Labs says POL succeeded MATIC as the native gas and staking token on Polygon PoS. In practical terms, POL is the current token name to know when discussing those functions on that network.

Migration arrangements depend on where the tokens are held. In an update dated September 3, 2025, Polygon Labs reported that 99% of MATIC had migrated and said holders with MATIC on Ethereum could use Polygon Portal for a 1:1 migration. That percentage describes the situation reported on that date, not the current migration total. An exchange or custodian may handle the process differently from a self-custody wallet, so check the current official instructions for the specific chain and platform. Polygon’s migration article warns that incorrect contract interactions can result in lost tokens; do not send tokens directly to a contract address as a substitute for following its migration procedure.
What does POL do?
POL has an established role on Polygon PoS: Polygon Labs identifies it as the network’s gas and staking token. Gas is the token used to pay transaction fees; staking is part of the network’s security and participation model. These functions describe utility, not a prediction about POL’s price or returns.

Polygon Labs has also described broader potential POL utility tied to Agglayer. In an April 2025 post, the company said Agglayer’s staking mechanics and exact fee structures were still being developed. Treat wider roles, eligibility, and any associated rewards as evolving rather than guaranteed. The same company’s September 2025 migration article described emissions earmarked over a decade for network security and community development, divided between staking rewards and a community treasury; it also said the community could adjust or discontinue that model. Those are terms stated in that dated publication, not immutable token economics or a promise of yield.
How do Polygon PoS, CDK chains and Agglayer differ?
Polygon’s components should not be treated as interchangeable networks. The table summarizes the distinctions described by Polygon Labs; a particular chain’s actual configuration and current rules matter.

The rollup-versus-validium distinction matters because posting transaction data and posting transaction hashes are not the same data-availability arrangement. A reader comparing chains should look at the actual design, what information is available and where, and the bridge and cross-chain trust model. The label “Polygon” alone does not establish that two chains have identical security assumptions.
What are Polygon’s advantages and limitations?
Potential advantages
- Usable token function on Polygon PoS: POL pays gas and is used in staking on that network, as described by Polygon Labs.
- Configurable chain design: Polygon CDK is presented as a modular toolkit, allowing builders to select supported components and configurations.
- Interoperability ambition: Agglayer is designed to coordinate activity among connected chains. Polygon Labs has described unified bridging and shared liquidity as goals, not as a guarantee that every chain or application already has those properties.
- Payments and real-world assets as strategic areas: Polygon’s 2025 retrospective highlighted these areas and listed activity and integrations. That is the company’s account of its ecosystem, not an independent ranking of adoption.
Limitations and risks
- Terminology can obscure what is being evaluated: A claim about Polygon PoS does not automatically apply to Agglayer or every CDK chain.
- Chain configurations differ: In particular, rollups and validiums have different data-posting approaches. Evaluate the specific chain rather than assuming a single security model.
- Token utility is not token performance: Gas and staking use do not establish future price, returns, or demand.
- Future POL roles are unsettled: Agglayer’s mechanics and fee arrangements were still being developed in the company’s April 2025 account, and the emissions model Polygon described can be changed by community decisions.
- Company-reported metrics are not independent verification: Polygon Labs’ performance and ecosystem statistics should be read as its own reported figures, not as an independent security audit or comparative benchmark.
Has Polygon reached 100,000 TPS?
No. Polygon Labs’ 2025 Gigagas roadmap described 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) as a long-term target for 2026 and beyond, not as achieved throughput. The roadmap also described 5,000-plus TPS as an end-of-2025 goal and said 5,000 TPS had been achieved in a devnet environment. A devnet result and a production-network result are different measures.

In a 2026 retrospective about 2025, Polygon Labs said the Bhilai upgrade pushed the network past 1,000 TPS and reported live throughput consistently above 1,400 TPS across real workloads. The company also reported Polygon stablecoin market capitalization above $3 billion for 2025. These are Polygon-published retrospective figures; the sources cited here do not independently validate them. Throughput figures also do not by themselves establish reliability, security, decentralization, or the performance of every Polygon-related chain.

What should you check before using or evaluating Polygon?
- Identify whether the service or asset is on Polygon PoS, a particular CDK chain, or another chain connected through Agglayer.
- Confirm which token pays gas on that specific network and whether a wallet or exchange handles any token migration for you.
- For a CDK chain, check whether it uses a rollup or validium configuration and how data availability and bridging work.
- Separate current network functionality from roadmap goals and company-reported milestones.
- Before relying on staking or other POL rewards, check the current rules, eligibility, fee arrangements, and risks; past or proposed terms do not guarantee future rewards.
